THESE ROSES MAKE GOOD STANDARDS
A well-grown standard rose is always a source of delight to the keen gardener. Some varieties, however, make better standards than others, a fact that must be borne in mind when choosing roses for present planting. Standard roses may be planted at this time of year; they should be staked securely at once. Roses that generally succeed as standards include the crimson Etoile de Hollande, the grand old rose-pink Caroline Testout, reddish-salmon Mrs Sam M'Gredy, orange-pink Betty Upriohard, cerise and salmon Shot" Silk, deep blush-coloured Mme Butterfly, the rosecoloured Mrs Henry Bowles, apricotyellow Lady Forteviot, white Frau Karl Druschki, orange-yellow Mrs G. A. Van Rosen, and Golden Dawn.
