SOLDIERS' BRIDES
COLONEL MUST APPROVE “ Soldiers wishing to marry must have their prospective brides approved by the commanding officer,” This notice, Issued in the daily orders caused dissatisfaction among the soldiers of a unit serving in England. “ The name of the prospective bride, together with the names of two people prepared to give testimonials to her character, must bo handed in to the commanding officer,” it was added. Some of the troops wrote to M.P.s and a ruling was to be sought in the House of Commons as to how far a colonel had the right to pry into the domestic affaire of his men. Under Army Regulations a colonel is entitled to “ approve ” the brides of soldiers and to call for testimonials to their respectability. But this provision is intended to apply to peace-time soldiering, where the question arises of taking wives on the “ married strength ” of the regiment, providing them with married quarters in the barracks, and taking them on tours of duty overseas.
