ST. KILDA BEACH CARNIVAL

NUMEROUS ATTRACTIONS Despite the weather conditions, lai-ga crowds have attended the carnival being held at Kettle Park, St.Kild* Beach. It is to the credit of the organisers, the- St. Kilda Improvement Society and the Otago Amateur Swimming Centre, that the attractions provided have drawn such large attendances,’and it is to be hoped that the weather will take a tprn for the better before tha week-end, when the carnival will- be concluded. With the idea of providing something novel every year the committee has during past yeairs'arranged for parachute descentis on two occasions, and last year brought the ever-popnlar Dodgems td l erilertaiii;the crowds. Thia ye*, in addition Ferns wheel, chair-o-plpne, .merry-go-round, and model train,'the committee engaged the Aerial Delgados, who_ each evening present an attractive ■ display, .of-, aerial gymnastics on flying trapezes, concluding with the slide of. death, in which the performer hangs by; his toes from a trapeze and slides from the top of a 40ft mast to a point some hundred feet away. During this extended week of the carnival the performer of this act does a single trapeze act on a trapeze suspended high in the air- from the top of the, slide, mast. These act* are presented in the open and there is no charge for admission to the grounds* But there are other, attractions in th# way of games and the winning of boxes of chocolates^ The spirit of the carnival is to give the public something worth while in return for their shillings, all of which are used to improve the amenities of the beach and to assist the local swimming clubs. It is the desire of the society to build salt water baths at'St* Kilda, and although this scheme may not be possible yet, there are many other ways in which the money can be spent, one in particular being the topdressing of the children’s playground and the erection of further playing devices for children. The .Ocean Beach Domain Board has done fine work in beautifying the approach to the beach, and now that the Beach Improvement Society has cleared the debt-i on th® pavilion and public tennis-courts itii hoped to assist the board to, further its wishes in that direction. The 'Carnival concludes to-morrow, the afternoon being given over to tha usual children’s day, when, treasure hunts, a competition for decorated prams or tricycles, and a children * bathing beauty parade will be heldGood prizes will be awarded the: winners of these competitions.
