BOWLING NOTES

[By Draw.)

Otago v. Southland. The annual match between the two provinces will take place at Invercargill on Saturday next. The Otago team of 32 players is not as strong as it might be, as a number of top-class players aro absent, duo to there being other attractions such as one-day tournaments. If these introprovincial fixtures are to be worth while, it will be the duty of those in charge of bonding affairs to make arrangements for these games that will not. allow of an overlap —or should we say interference —from side issues. Perhaps the date arranged by tlie centre is not in keeping with the best interests of our local bowlers. Some improvement appears to be necessary in the arranging of these fixtures. Perhaps five rinks a side would bo more suitable, and this number would probably assist in making the contests more enticing to players, and naturally lead to a better display of howling on wider rinks than at present used. Kaituna Club. Last season this club held a most successful one-day tournament, and local bowlers are sure to be pleased with the decision of the club to hold a similar function this year on the 24th inst. Both the club’s_ greens will be used, and as they are in excellent order, a good day’s bowling is assured. Any intending entrants should make early application to Mr Smeaton or Mr Standage, of the Kaituna Club. Brighton Club. This club will hold a one-day tournament on Saturday, February 17. The games,, I understand, will commence about 9.30, and there is still room for a couple of rinks. Mr C. Beck, Brighton, is tho club’s secretary. Elderly Bowlers’ Day. This function will bo held on the Dunedin green next Saturday afternoon, commencing at 2 o’clock. Good entries have been received, and a good day’s bowling is promised the veterans. Saturday Shield Competition. The wind last Saturday made the concluding series of the shield competition on many greens just a little difficult in regard to playing fine shots. The day had many surprises in store for the leading teams. ' Caversham, which entered the final game with a lead over Dunedin. Kaikorai, and St. Kilda. was very unfortunate, as it won only one section out of five. Kaikorai also had a bad day, losing two of three

sections, while St. Kilda made an even break by winning three out of four sections. Dunedin had a good average by winning four of six sections, and this allowed them to reach the top of the shield ladder, and consequently win the Saturday competition for the season 1939-40. In the competition 12 Saturdays were set aside for play, but only nine games were completed. On two Saturdays play was impossible, and on another games were only partially played, and later, by decision of the centre, the games set down for that particular day were abandoned. Thp nine games gave clubs an opportunity of collecting 108 points (12 points the limit for each day). A glance at the points scored by the leading teams shows that they all secured good averages, and it is also pleasing to note that all secured some competition points. Another feature of the results this year is the fact that many of the large clubs were near the, top. Dunedin and St. Kilda each field six sections, Caversham and Kaituna each five sections, and the Kaikorai Club, which holds second place equal with Caversham, plays three sections. (Each section comprises three lots of fours, making 12 players per section.) The win of the Dunedin Club is certainly quite a popular one, and the parent club has already received many congratulations on its success. No doubt the success will he duly honoured in proper bowling style at a later period of the year. Result of Saturday's Matches, February 3.

Four-rink Championship. At the time of writing these notes it is difficult to collect the results of this week’s games.. St. Kilda have added another win to their list 'of successes, and they appear a certainty to win the A section. In section Bit is very difficult to try to pick the winner. Kaituna, one of the section leaders, suffered’ defeat on Monday evening at the hands of the Leith Club on the last cud. St. Clair, another leader, went down to Cavcrsham. Balmacewcn are going well. Results to the end of seventh round : —Section A.— Wins. Losses.

Wednesday Competition (Hope Shield). Herewith is a list of games to date, in which eight series have been completed. There are still four games to be played, February 7, 14. 21, and 2,8. There are 14 clubs taking part in the competition, which appears to be becoming more popular each year.
