PLAY AN OTAGO ELEVEN SENSATIONAL START TO MATCH Conditions were excellent for cricket when the match between a Maniototo team and an Otago eleven, the latter including several colts, was begun. The wicket was in good order and a cool breeze blew across the ground. Leader captained the home team and Dr A. Priest the visitors. Otago had first use of the wicket, hut the start was disastrous, for in the first over two wickets fell. Mulholiand was the bowler, a medium pace swinger, and with the first ball of the match he clean bowled Lawson, who had opened with Toomoy, with an inswinging full toss. o—l—o. M'Gregor came in, but he survived only three balls, edging the fifth to E. Blakeley in the slips. o—2—o. M’lntyrc, the Waitaki schoolboy, joined Toorney. The fielding was keen, hut M'lntyre soon began laying on the wood in effective. * if not stylish, fashion. Toomey was batting nicely, and at 39 Becker relieved M‘Atarnney, who had been operating from the Kensington end. Shortly afterwards another well-known Rugby player, Kearney, took the ball from Mulholland. and disposed of Toomoy, who returned a fairly simple catch to the bowler, 45—3—H5. Fraser came in and M'lntyre lifted Becker over the long-on fence for 6, repeating the feat off Kearney a few minutes later, only to be howled next ball. 64—4—46. A bright knock, which included two 6’s and six 4’s. Graham joined Fraser, and both batsmen settled down to steady play. With 80 up J. W. Blakeley was tried with the ball. Neither batsmen could pierce the field. E Blakeley was _ the next bowler (the sixth to be tried), and play was slow. The hundred was hoisted in 90 minutes, and at 104 Graham lifted J. W.
