AT WiNGATUI THIS MORNING

It was very hot at Wingatui this morning for training operations, and the tracks fast, the sand one being very dusty, and there was not sufficient breeze to carry the dust away. Combat was going better than Gusto over six furlongs on the sand in Imm •17 2-ssec, the first three taking 36 3- > , . , 'Withdrawal sprinted three furlongs on the same track in 40 l-ssec, and Foxy followed a little later in 39sec. Our Empire and Lady Constance were companions in a five-furlong spin on the sand, and after running the first two in 24sec completed the task together in 63 3-ssec. Valantua, looking well after several weeks’ spell, sprinted three furlongs on the sand in 39 3-ssec. After running the first two furlongs in 24 4-ssec Palencia and Rondini completed five furlongs on the sand in 66 4Nightwings was going much better than GusterinA at the conclusion of nine furlongs on the sand in 2min 10 l-ssec. ' There was no pace on until after passing the five furlong post, and the last half mile was run in 34 2-ssec. Hanlon’s head was just in front of Norseman’s at the post after running seven furlongs on the sand in Imin 31 l-ssec, but Norseman could have done better.

Roseman easily held Made Money over the final stages of a similar journey in Imin 31 2-ssec, after beginning slowly. Half and Half ran five furlongs in the centre of .the course in 67 4-ssec. Disband and Irish Colleen, after running the first furlong in 12sec, completed half a mile on the course in 51 2-sseo, Disband winning the gallop easily. Giggleswick (Haraill) jumped the brush double in front of the stands three times, and gave a good exhibition. He afterwards sprinted over three furlongs on the course in 43sec. M‘Heath (H. Powell), Pink Robe (A. Powell), and Pilot’s Love (F. Anning), were schooled over the two hurdles along the back, but the display was not a good one. Night Scout (Hamill) gave a good exhibition in a round over three hurdles. JOTTINGS Answer to Correspondent. “ Inquisitive.”—(l) The Wingatui course is just a mile and a-quarter in circumference, Oamaru and Invercargill slightly over nine furlongs, and Waikouaiti and Wyndham one mile. (2) The Oamaru course is a faster one than the Wingatui course, but the Wyndham track is the fastest mile course in the South Island. (3) The Riccarton course is nearly a mile and a-half in circumference. (4) All courses are measured 3ft out from the rails. To Ride Balinavar. C. G. Goulshro !haa been engaged to ride Balinavar in the Auckland Cup. Eye Injured. When P. Atkina was caught in the barrier on the first day at Woodville he injured an eye, and did not ride on the second day of the meeting. Wild Career Amiss. Wild Career, who was nominated for the Dunedin, Waikouaiti, Wyndlhara, and Invercargill meetings, is reported to be lame as the result of meeting with an injury to one of his legs. Dictate’s Record, Dictate, who cost Mr M. O’Brien 50 guineas as a yearling, has now started 72 times for 11 wins, 13 seconds, and the same number of third placings. Including place money, he fcas won £3,785 in stakes. Catalogue. Though Catalogue returned fit and well from Australia, it is reported from Palmerston North that he is an unlikely starter in the Auckland Cup. His next appearance is likely to he in the Wellington Centennial Cup next month. Thoroughbred Blood. Lucky Jack' is just one more of the large number of star pacers with thoroughbred blood in their veins. Harold Logan, Roi d’Or, War Buoy, Do Soto, and a score of others. L. J. Ellis’s Mount. Floodtide, who is to be ridden in the Auckland Cup by L. J. Ellis, has been pleasing his connections on the tracks lately, and they are confident he will run a good race. Won Nine Races With Jumpers. H. S. Greene trained the winners of both hurdle races at the Woodville meeting, and his record now stands at

nine wins with jumpers since this season opened, but three of the wins were scored on the flat. Worth Following. Phe Watcher ” in the * Dominion,’ selects Friesland as a likely sort to follow during the holiday meetings. His wm at the Woodville meeting when not quite ready, shows him to bo as good as ever. Peony Rose Well. 1 At Riverton on Thursday morning the trestles were about 20ft out from the rails, and Peony Rose was sent a mile and three furlongs. Under a nice hold all the way, she ran the last half in 53}sec and the last three furlongs in 38}sec. The Two-year-olds. So far this season there has been no outstanding two-year-old, and none has won more than two races. Fillies have been in the lead throughout the season, and won again each day at Woodville, where Ring Ling added her name to the list of dual winners. Doubts His Stamina. A writer in the Wellington * Post ’ doubts whether Beaupartir is a true stayer, and says he may find the journey in the Auckland Cup too far. He bases this opinion on the fact that the Beau Pere colt was a bit lucky to have beaten Peerless in the Great Northern St. Leger last Easter.

A Lazy Track Worker. Boswell, who is reported to be a lazy track worker, and Donbleack ran a mile at Invercargill on Thursday morning in Imin 46 4-ssec and were together all the way, but the former had to be ridden to keep up with Doubleack. The latter is not likely to race at Wingatui until the second and third days. Safety Numbers. A correspondent wishes to know the safety numbers allowed to start from the different barriers at Waikouaiti. As big fields are engaged at each of the holiday meetings this information regarding the other courses may also be interesting:—

For Interdominion Championships. Token has been paid up for in the interdominion events at Perth, and there is a possibility that F. P. Brosnan will take him across. The Kerrytown pacer is a slick beginner, and this is an asset on a half-mile track. New Zealand owners are guaranteed £l5O for one horse and £IOO for each additional horse, these sums to be deducted in the event of a horse winning that amount.

An Outstanding Gallop. Sailing Lady’s good mile and aquarter on the Invercargill course on Thursday morning will bring her inti demand for the Otago Handicap nex* week. With the flags about 12ft out from the rails she ran the first two furl longs in 26 4-ssec, the first half-mile in 53sec, five furlongs in Imin 6 l-ssec.! the last four in 52 2-ssec, making 2min 11 4-ssec for the full journey. Sailing Lady was carrying a few pounds less than she will have in the Otago Handicap, but it was an outstanding gallop. English Statistics. With six horses Lord Rosebery headed the list of winning 'owners ing the season just closed in England, the stakes amounting to ( £38,464. Gordon Richards again headed the list of winning jockeys with 155 wins out of 726 mounts. This was the thirteenth time he has headed the list in 14 seasons, and has now ridden 2,586 winners, only 160 less than the late Fred Archer’s record.

J. L. Jarvis, who trains for Lord Rosebery and other prominent owners, was the most successful trainer.
