BESSARABIA.- Typical peasant of the Rumanian district of Bessarabia, on which Soviet Russia is casting envious eyes. Before 1917 this territory formed part of Tsarist Russia and was awarded to Rumania in 1920, with its own agreement, after having previously declared itself independent of the Soviet Unnion. Bessarabia is a source of maize, wheat, and wool.
