ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
“ Constant Reader,” Southland.—ln the case of ranunculus bulbs, the foliage should be allowed to die down before lifting them, when they should be placed in a cool but dry store. New bulbs give the best results, and, being so cheap, it is hardly worth while saving the old bulbs. Stinton’s Australian strain is the best on the market. Anemones can be treated in the same way. “ C.F.,” St. Kilda.—To cultivate runner beans without sticks or wirenetting, all that is required is to keep the tips of the runners or leaders pinched out as they form. This will cause the plants to break away from the base, and in a very short time the growth will become thick and hedgelike. In this way the flowers are protected from the wind and will set very much better than when exposed on sticks and netting.
