LAWRENCE NOTES

[From Opr Correspondent]

Depreciation by deer in the area near the Blue Mountains in the Tuapeka West and Clydevale districts is causing concern to farmers. One farmer stated that, in his opinion, stalkers now seem to be shooting only those animals with worthwhile heads, and leaving the others to multiply unchecked, and continue their attacks on turnips and young oats in particular. No bounty is now paid for tails of deer, whereas up to some time ago a shilling was paid for every one delivered. The fact that the sum of £172 was held by the Lawrence Borough Council in a special account for the one-time Lawrence Band! was mentioned at a meeting of Swimming Club representatives and the Lawrence Borough Council. The mayor (Mr 11, P. Batchelor) remarked that apparently no one could obtain use of the money, and he emphasised the need of a properly constituted and permanent body having full control of local funds and properties. At a meeting of the Lawrence Drama Circle it was decided to form a club to be called the Lawrence Drama Club. Mrs Hickman was appointed chairwoman, and Mr J. E. Templer secretary and treasurer. _ It was decided to call a general meeting in March.
