MEETING DF HARBOUR BOARD The monthly meeting of the Harbour Board held last night was presided over by Mr W. (Begg. There were present Messrs 18. Walls, J. W. Munro, M.P., F. E. Tyson, D. F. H. Sharpe, T. Scollay, A. Campbell, W. R. Clarke, A. Smith, and J. Preston. . FINANCIAL. The bank balance showed a net credit of £6,702 5s 7d. Receipts for October were £11,806 as compared with £12,774 for the same month last year. Expenditure was £18,060 as compared with £17,410 for the previous October, It was agreed to donate £3 3s to the funds of the Y.M.C.A.; to the Otago Annual Regatta Committee, £5 ss; to the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association for participation in the Sanders and Cornwell Cup races. £lO 10s; to the North-east Harbour Boating Club, £3 3s. PATRIOTIC FUNDS. ‘ It was decided to donate the sum of £IOO to the Provincial Patriotic Fund. THANKSGIVING DAY. The invitation from tthe Dunedin Council of Christian Congregations to bo present at the national thanksgiving day service (as part of the Centennial celebrations) in the Town Hall on Sunday, January 7, was accepted. IMPORTS AND EXPORTS. For the mouth of October imports were 28,067 tons, and exports 7,922 tons. For the previous year respective figures were, 23,707 tons and 7,468 tons. PORT STATISTICS. Arrivals and departures for the month of October were reported as follows: — Arrivals,—Dunedin: 45 vessels, 72,430 tons (32 coastal, 4 intercolonial, and 9 overseas). Port Chalmers: 4 vessels, 17,095 tons (2 coastal and 2 overseas). Departures.—Dunedin: 41 vessels, 62,290 tons (30 coastal, 2 intercolonial, and 9 overseas). Port Chalmers: 4 vessels, 9,096 tons (3 coastal and 1 overseas). The pilot launch Koputai was taken over from the builders on November 1 and performed her first service on November 7, and is giving entire satisfaction. STANDING COMMITTEE’S REPORTS. The Standing Committee, in the matter of a communication from the Otago Acclimatisation Society asking the board to agree to a portion of the Leith Canal from St. David street to the mouth being made a prohibited area during the months of May, June, July, and August in each year in order to prevent people from stealing trout, recommended that provision covering the board’s portion of the canal, from Forth street to the outlet, be made in a new by-law which was being prepared to give effect to the enabling provisions of the Otago Harbour Board Empowering Act, 1939, with regard to trespass on the board’s lands.—Approved. The committee, in the matter of a communication from the district railway engineer with respect to access to the loading yard at Anderson’s Bay. and the securing of a right-of-way up to Ferry road, recommended that the department be given a right-of-way in perpetuity over the board’s lands from Oohden street to Ferry road, and that

the department’s title to this right-of-way be legalised by registration against the board’s title to the land.—Approved. ■The committee reported it had received and noted a communication from the superintendent of police with respect to the recent complaint in regard to damage to beacons in the Lower Harbour by rifle fire, and reporting the result of the enquiries which had been made, and had also noted communications from the Ravensbourne and Broad Bay Boating Clubs conveying their assurances of co-operation to prevent the dangerous practice of interference with harbour lights and beacons. —Approved. WAIKOUAITI LOSS. A motion expressing sympathy with the Union Steam Ship Company in the loss sustained through the wredk of the Waikouaiti was passed.
