WEATHER MARS YACHTING OPENING
TWO TRIALS ABANDONED SANDERS GUP RAGE A FIASCO Worse conditions could hardly have prevailed than those on Saturday, when the official opening of the 1939-40 yachting season took place at the (Raveusbourne Club’s headquarters. Heavy showers fell and strong ■ southerly squalls arising soon after the start of the third Sanders Cup trial caused so raanv capsizes and withdrawals that before long there were only two boats left in the race. These two, Lynette and Val, put up a brave showing in the heavy weather, and completed the course, Lynette winning by nearly 11 minutes. Val had a big lead at one stage, but she missed the leeward mark and went half a mile past it before she realised her mistake. This action gave Lynette the race. Unfortunately, a protest was entered against the winner by the skipper of Eileen for an alleged foul just after the start, so that no decision will be reached until after the association has
considered the protest at its nest meeting. The, Idlealong and Cornwell Cup trials were abandoned, and no club races were held. There was a large crowd at the opening however, including the commodore of the (Ravensbourne Club, under whose auspices the opening was held, the Mayor of West Harbour (Mr A. Smith) and president of the Yacht and Motor Boat Association (Mr C. Sniith), and the commodores of several other dubs on the harbour. The Mayor of the borough declared the season opened. The West Harbour Band was in attendance, and the ladies of the club attended to the afternoon tea ments.WELLINGTON TRIALS Two Sanders Cup trials were sailed on Saturday, and both were won by Kitty, sailed by J. C. Bolland, with Floclairc, a new boat, second, and Tassie third. Idlealong and Cornwell Cup trials were also held.
