FAST TIMES AT RICCARTON

ENRICH EQUALS RECOM} V CEKTKPMBE WINS KTIOroiITAH CMMIIM. WEEK CMiCLUDED The 1939 New Zealand Cup carnival was brought' to a successful close on Saturday afternoon when there was again a very large attendance at Biccarton, and the weather was . bright but windy. • The course was in very, fast condition, and the nor’-wester wind blowing almost' directly down the straight helped to make the times recorded very fast. 1 ~ Two small fields, in the two-year-old and open sprint races, seriously affected the totalisator returns, but there was plenty of money on the course as was shown by the betting on the Metropolitan Handicap, on which £12,829 10s was invested as compared with £12,834 on the New Zealand Cup the,, previous Saturday.; The £68,700 handled during the afternoon brought the total for the , meeting to £243,495 .10s,^a decrease.of £6,987 on the amount handled "the previous year. ; , The Metropolitan Handicap .attracted a splendid field, and resulted in a good win for the North Islander, 'Centrepoise, .who was always well placed throughout the running and; over the . last, .furlong, had the race in safe keeping. - There was some crowding, going . put, of the straight shortly after the;, start, and Capricious appeared to’suffer the most, losing several lengths. She finished very . fast into third place, and but for this mishap would have seriously; .troubled the winner. Norseman, always well hack in the early .running, Was lucky in securing a good run :next the rails across the top and into the straight, . and was travelling faster-than the winner at the finish. Of the. three • favourites Seigmund was the first - beaten. ■ Yours Truly had to .bo hunted hard over the first three furlongs to obtain a good position," and when he hit the ‘front about a furlong ■ and a-half from"' home his victory was ac-claimed,.-but he had nothing left in reserve to stall , off the late Challenger. Beaupartir was never far back", and car- . Tied his 9.2 well, finishing fourth, and • still left .the that .he was the .best four-year-old of the season. There was a fairly strong wind blow-ing-down the straight when the Pioneer ■ ■ Handicap was run, and Enrich, steering a straighter course i. than in the Welcome Stakes, beat Atreus'by a narrow "margin in 58sec, equalling the New Zealand and Australian record jointly held by Machine Gun (1904, Paganelli (1927) , and Amigo (1937); • ; Dark Flight repeated his success on Wednesday by winning the Members’ Handicap very easily, and .could have made another, time record'had he. been pushed. - He now ranks as one-of; the best sprinters in . the South Island. A feature of the week V-racing was the excellent and prompt starting by - Mr M'Nah. which allowed punctuality to be closely observed.' ■■ SUBURBAN HANDICAP. £250. One . ' ‘ ■••••, mile. • 3- Mr D. E. NOTES ON THE RACING [By St. Claiu.) Chirp was made £6O better favourite than Dividend for the Suburban Handicap, but appeared to be a little sore in her preliminary, and, though she ran a good race, had no chance with Lockit, who won. comfortably. Ruling Star and In the Dark were slow to begin, and Pink Lad, Lockit, and Phil were smartest to show out. but after going about two furlongs Phil got badly interfered wij;h when Royal Lassie ran to the front and led Brilliant Boa, Chit Chat, ■ Lockit, Chirp, and Dividend round the far turn. Royal Lassie drew out about two lengths clear across the top, and was followed by Chit Chat, Brilliant Boa, Lockit, and Chirp into the. straight. At the distance both Chirp and Lockit headed off Royal i Lassie, and a difference of 261 b m weights told its tale, Lockit beating the favburito home a length. Pink Lad was only a head away third, then a gap of three* lengths to Chit Chat. Brilliant Boa and Phil were next. The winner, a five-year-old gelding -by Siegfried from Polly Peachum, won at Riccarton last season, and, owned by Mr D. E. Wanklyn, a steward of the club, is a half-brother to M'Heath. . Not Out was £6l better fancied than Areas for the Seymour Hack Handiand hackers of the latter had bad luck, as he nearly got knocked over after going about a furlong and a-half. Raeburn and Night Pal were both slow to begin, and' Rebellion led out from Phenomenal, Not Out. Improvident, and Flame Queen. Phenomenal, and Rebellion led across, the top from Not Out, Raeburn; and Flame Queen, and Rebellion was just in front of Phenomenal as they turned for home, with Raeburn and Not Out next. Before reaching the distance Raeburn had drawn about three lengths ■ clear, and ran home an easy winner by a length and a-half from Night Pal, who finished very fast and beat Not Out by a similar distance. The winner ;is a four-vear-om gelding by Gplossiis' from Shuffler, 'and comes from the; same; stable as Catalogue.

Duncannon, who" was_ reported to. be suffering froni a bruised heel, was nearly £3OO better fancied than the Trench Fight-Wild Talk bracket, in the Cressy Handicap) these two chances carry in between them more than half the pool on the , win machine. Queen Dorothy caused a long delay at the start, and was coming in on the bound when the tapes were released, and led Verey. Lights and Haughty Winner out. Queen Dorothy was steadied going to the far turn, where the order was Verey Lights, Duncannon, Wild Talk, Queen Dorothy, Swordstick, Spartan, and. Night Dress. Verey Lights led across the top from Duncannon, Glenogil; Kilrobe, and Wild Talk._ As they turned for home Verey Lights was joined by Duncannon. Glenogil, and Kilrobe, .with Wild’Talk- and Queen Dorothy just in behind theni. At the distance the' leaders were done with, and Wild Talk and Queen Dorothy singled .themselves out. ' In a great race to the winning post Wild Talk beat Queen Dorothy half a head. Spartan was five lengths away third, then Kilrobe, Duncannon, Hqughty Winner, and Swordstick. Wild Talk, a four-year-old filly, by Winning Hifck-Scrimmage, was the only winner carrying the Clifford colours at the meeting, a very unusual occurrence, Gold Flight was withdrawn from the Pioneer Handicap, leaving only four starters for a £SOO stake, and Enrich was slightly over. £3OO better fancied than Atreus, and just beat him by a very narrow margin. "Enrich, Don’t Forget, and Atreus raced on even terms over the first furlong, then the firstnamed led Atreus on to the course proper. At the distance Atreus was half a length to the good, but the more seasoned Enrich hung on the better to win by a head. Don’t Forget was six lengths away third, five lengths in front of Kurawhi. •The winner, by Safari from Sight Draft, a Paper Money mare, was bought at the late Mr _ W. Higgins’s sale last July for 225 guineas, and last month won the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham. There was heavy wagering on the Metropolitan Handicap and the pools totalled £12,829 10s, the best backed being Seignuuid (1,617-1,764), Yours Truly (1,437-1,598, Beaupartir (1,3341,492), Capricious (1,017-1,580), and Windsor Chief (884-1,250). from a prompt start The Wrecker (8), Beaupartir (10), Yours Truly (15), Windsor Chief (1), Capricious (14), and Sovereign Lady (7) were the leaders to the turn out of the straight, Thermidor being last. Just on the turn Capricious got badly interfered with and lost some ground. At the half-mile post (51sec) Seigmund and The Wrecker were racing together two lengths in front of Ce'ntrepoise and Yours Truly, also racing together, Rabble, Beaupartir, and Hunting Cat. There was no change rounding the far turn, and at the end of a mile (Imin 38 4-ssec) Seigmund and The Wrecker were still together in charge from Centrepoise, who was a neck in front of Yours Truly, with Rabble, Beaupartir, and Hunting Cat next. Seigmund and The Wrecker were first into the straight from Yours Truly, Centrepoise, Beaupartir, and Rabble. The -Wrecker then dropped out, and just after passing the false rail Yours Truly ran to the front, and Beaupartir appeared to interfere with Centrepoise. About JOO.vds from the post' Centrepoise got clear, and, taking charge, drew out to win by two lengths from Norseman, who got a clear run next the rails rounding the home turn,

with Capricious a length away. Then came Beaupartir, Yours Truly,_ The Wrecker, Seigmund, Rabble, Windsor Chief, and Second Innings, Centrepoise,' a . four-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Monette, showed much better form than in 'his two previous starts at the meeting, but ran right up to his Wellington form, where he won the Watkins Handicap.

Dark Flight was about £450 better fancied for the Members’ Handicap than Paper Slipper, and leading all the way won even more easily than on Wednesday. Jumping out very smartly from No. 4 position at the barrier, Dark Flight led out froiii Brunhild and Globe/ Trotter. Paper Slipper' joined Globe Trotter at the turn into the straight, where Dark Flight was three lengths clear of Brunhild. Without being extended Dark Flight easily held his advantage, and won by three lengths from Brunhild, who beat Rakahunga a neck. Globe Trotter was a poor fourth and Paper Slipper last. Dark Flight is a three-year-old colt by Nigger Minstrel from Franeolin, and this win brought his stake winnings to £645 at the fixture.

Great Swoop was over £3OO better fancied than Nigger Boy for the Stonyhurst Handicap for three-year-olds, but a good third favourite in Yogi easily accounted for them. Scold was the slowest to find her feet at the start, and Sceptre was smartest out from Lord Midas and Nigger Boy. At the far turn Lord Midas joined Sceptre, and this pair led Asia, Yogi, Nigger Boy, and Great Swoop. There was no change at the half-mile, and turning for home Asia ran up and joined Lord Midas and Sceptre in the lead, and they were followed by Yogi, Nigger Boy, and Great Swoop. Asia took charge at the false rail from Yogi, Nigger Boy, and Scold, but when .Yogi challenged her , at the distance she retired, and Yogi went on to win well by a length from Scold, who got up to beat Nigger Boy a short halllength. Great Swoop was a head away fourth, and Asia and Cymric were next. • „ " Yogi is bv Beau Pere from Prestige, and was much better suited over the shorter distance than the Derby course.

There was exactly £12,000 invested on the two pools on the Hagley Mack Handicap, and Merry March was elected favourite, being £6 10s better backed than Auctor,. with Chirp a good third selection, and over the last furlong she ran. homo easy winner. Half and Half, who started from next the rails, got chopped out at the start, and Auctor took up the running from Kobi, Great Legion, and Chirp. After going about two furlongs Kobi joined Auctor in the lead, and they were followed by Great Legion, Chirp, &nd Jtsperanco Bay. Excepting that Merry March. Chirp, and Captain Bruce had moved up next to Great Legion there was no change racing across nor into the straight. At the distance Chirp ran to the front and won comfortably by two lengths from'Merry March, who finished very fast and beat Kobi a length. Dearth put in a fast run to finish fourth, with Shanghai Lily, Princess Minerva, and Auctor next. By Full Feather from Lucy Locket, the winner, having her second start during the afternoon, had 321 b less to carry than in the Hi Hi-weight Handicap, and gave I/. J. FJ’.i’s his first winning mount at the fixture.
