Lady Sidey left on Friday for Wellington, where she will attend the Plnnket Council meeting. Mrs W. AI. Finlayson, Mr A. M. Finlayson (Dunedin), and Mrs Noel Smith (Lauder) are visiting Christchurch. Miss Doreen Starr is the guest of her aunt, Mrs Herbert Bardsley, Wellington. The Misses A. and E. M’Donald and Master Paul M'Donald are visitors to Wellington Mr and Mrs Sarsfield Flood and Mr and Mrs Tom Ross return to Dunedin on Monday. Mrs Frank Bright, of Rotorua, and Miss Kathleen Spence, of Napier, left Dunedin on their return home on Tuesday. Mr and Mrs C. F. Chandler, Queen street, were “ at home ” on Tuesday evening to celebrate the birthday of the elder daughter, Joy. Mrs E. Booth was hostess gift afternoon in honour of Miss Beryl Broderick, who is to be a November bride. Word has been received from England that Miss Shiola M'Millan, who has been travelling on the Continent, is now driving an ambulance in London. A surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs J. E. MacManus, Kaikorai, on the occasion of their thirtieth wedding anniversary last Wednesday. ■ Mrs J. A. Sim' and Miss Kathleen Greenslade will leave on Monday for Wellington, where they are to be the Dunedin delegates to the Townswomen’s Guild Conference. •.

Mrs Douglas Williams, of Auckland, and Mrs Gordon Spence, of Napier, who have been in Dunedin attending the golden wedding celebrations of their parents, Mr and Mrs James Brown, of Cargill street, returned north by the through express on Tuesday.

The approaching marriage of Miss Margaret Annan, of Clyde, has been the occasion for a number of functions by her friends—Mrs G. D. Taylor (Conroys), Mrs A. R. Annan, and Mr H. E. Stevens, jun. ‘ Many useful presents were received by the guest.

Delegates leaving on Monday for the half-yearly council meeting of the_ Plunket Society, to be held in Wellington next week, include the president, Mrs James Begg, Dr Helen Deem, Miss Fitzgibbon, Mrs J. Al'George, Mrs L. Cleghom, Mrs Sandford Cox, Mrs D. Reid, and Miss Hodinott.

A successful “ at home ” was held by the North-east Valley Presbyterian women’s meeting recently, when community singing and a varied programme were enjoyed. Presentations were made to the leader, pianist, and secretary of .the ladies’ clioir. Sister Lysbeth and members of the committee were accorded votes of thanks.

A garden party is to be held on Saturday, November 18, from 2.30 to 5 ip.m., in the grounds of Littlebourne House, when the Women’s Auxiliary of the London Missionary Society hope to augment its funds by providing afternoon tea and by sale of goods. It is hoped many will take the opportunity of visiting this fine old property, so kindly lent for the occasion by the City Council.

Miss Rena Simpson was hostess ata pantry evening given at her home in St. Clair on Thursday night in honour of her sister, Miss Eileen Simpson, who is to be a December bride. The guests included Mesdames R. T. Simpson, A. Emslie, A. Simpson, and the Misses Zeetha Johnston, Dorothy Kennedy, Jov Starr, Trixie Wood, Ailsa Skinner, Rose Davis, Nance Dunlop, Mario Tilleyshort, Moya Ripley, Norma Gore, Molly M'Kenzie, and Joyce Falck. A very pleasant evening was tendered on Monday lust- by Sir and Mrs H. J. Vernon at their residence at Dumbarton to members of the Hacromai Chib, Young .Farmers’ Chib, and the Benger Harmonica Band. An excellent programme of -entertainment was provided, including an interesting talk on Poland by Dr Gilmour.

Miss Ethel Formby, sister of George Formby, the comedian, has been secretly • married at Devonshire Square Register Office to Pilot-officer John Albert Gibson, a New Zealander, whom she met for the first time just a week previously. The “ love-at-first-sight ” introduction took place in a Blackpool club, where Miss Formby is appearing in a cabaret. She has retired from the stage. The bridegroom arrived in England early last year for a short-service Commission in the Royal Air Force.

Prior to leaving the Silverstream district Mrs Paterson, who is taking up her residence in Dunedin, was the recipient of a farewell gift (a handbag and gloves) from the residents and the water race staff. Mrs Paterson’s husband, who had been inspector of the Silverstream water race, died recently, and on this account a public farewell was not possible, but Mrs Turner, m the name of the donors, waited on Mrs Paterson, who is held in high esteem, made the presentation, and extended to her good wishes for the future.

It was a very happy party that forgathered at the Otago Women’s Club last Thursday morning to say au reroute Mrs J. B. Smith, who so willingly has been counsellor and friend to the group of members interested in contract bridge. Mrs €. A. Thompson, acting as spokeswoman, asked Mrs Smith to accept a small memento as a token of appreciation, this being ably seconded with amusing anecdotes by Miss F. Campbell. Mr and Mrs Richmond entertained guests at a dance held in the Strand Salon to celebrate the coming-of-age of their ' only daughter Nellie. Mrs Richmond received the guests wearing a frock of navy blue Georgette relieved with a spray of gold friesias. She was assisted by the guest of honour, who wore a frock of pink net over tafettacut on early Victorian linos and worn off the shoulders. Otago Women’s Club: Poetry Circle. At the Tea Kiosk in the Upper Botanic Gardens, the Poetry Circle of the Otago Women’s Club, ou Tuesday afternoon, held the final meeting ot : the year. There was a large attendance of members. Airs Cowie, the retiring chainvoman, acted as hostess, and the musical programme, arranged ’ Airs Gilbert Black, was much enjoyed. The tea tables looked most attractive, being decorated with the lovely, uncommon protcas grown in the Gardens. The New Zealand National Anthem, sung by all present, opened the programme. Then followed songs and duets by Airs Black and Airs C. F. Roberts, interspersed with amusing poems given by Miss Holland, .the accompaniments to the songs being played by Airs Peter Dick. The items had a distinctly imperialistic tone, suitable to the times, ‘ Land of Hope and Glory,’ ‘There’s a Land,’ and ‘ The Dear Homeland,’ among others, being sung, and the party finished with all singing ‘ Auld Lang Syne ’ and ‘ God Save the King.’ Then a stroll through the lovely azalea garden and rhododendron dell brought to a close the activities of the Poetry Circle for the year.

Roxburgh Notes. , Mx - s Walter Bayly, of Dunedin, has been spending a holiday at Roxburgh with Air and Mrs. Bayly. A social evening was held in the Rox-bui-gh Anglican Church Sunday School on Tuesday evening to welcome the new vicar for the parish, the Rev. F. L. Irwin. , Bishop Fitchett, of Dunedin, was. present and introduced Rev. Mr Irwin to the gathering. World Fellowship Week. The Y.W.C.A. World’s Week of Prayer and World Fellowship takes place this year from November 12 to 18. The sunrise service will be held on Sunday morning at 7_ o’clock, near the Aloana tennis courts, if fine, and if wet, in the Trinity Methodist Church, Aloray Place. The hostel resident service will be held at 10 o’clock on Sunday, and the x-esidents from _ the Y.AI.C.A. have been invited to join in with this service. On Tuesday, November 14, an all-membex-s’ service will be held in the Y.AV.C.A. Hall at 8 p.m. Members and friends will be welcome at all of these services, and members arc asked to accept this as the only notice. Mannequin Parade. Miss Esme Scott, Cyclax, London, arrived in Dunedin yesterday and will be in the Cyclax Salon at the D.I.C. for a fortnight giving free consultations on the all-absorbing subject of beauty culture. Aliss Scott is 'widely experienced in all fields of this work, having studied in Europe and America. The Cyclax beauty mannequin parade, to be held at tlxe Savoy on Wednesday next at 3.30 p.m., is to be the outstanding feature of her_ visit. This parade is run in conjunction with Miss T. Grannan-Smith the D.I.C. Cyclax consultant. Acting as mannequins for • the occasion will be Mesdames:—Wakefield Holmes, John Finch, James Ritchie; the Misses Edna Brown, Peggy Brewer, Diana and Jean Abraham, W. Smith, F. Campbell, Hilary Runnerstrum, and Bessie Rowe. D.I.C. gowns will be worn, each attuning with the cosmetics. Sherry Party, Airs J. Suthex-land Ross was hostess at a sherry party given at her home, “ Broomhill,” Roslyn, on Thux-sday evening, when officials and group representatives of the Otago branch of the British Drama League were present. Mrs Ross, who received the guests wearing a full-length pink floral ninon gown, took the opportunity of congratulating the cast of the winning play at the recent festival held in Timax-u.
