D RACE RECORD

BLAIR ATHOLS GREAT PERFORMANCE ICEVUS WINS FREE-FOR-ALL CONCLUDING DAY OF METROPOLITAN TROTS Pleasure of what promised to bo the most interesting day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington was spoiled by a very high wind which reached gale force at times and clouded the track and surroundings with dust, though the track 'was frequently watered and harrowed. The conditions made the tack slower than usual, and the attempt jto have been made by Lawn Derby to lower his own record for a mile had to he abandoned. Fortunately there was a lull in the wind when the Louisson Handicap was run, and the large crowd saw Blair Athol establish a race , record of 3min 11 3-ssec for a mile and a-half in a most exciting race. Great Jewel, who was made favourite, unfortunately skipped badly at the start and lost considerably more, ground than he was beaten by,' and it was left to Pot Luck to extend Blair Athol. Though it took 2min 13sec to run the first mile the last four furlonas were run in 58 3-ssec, and this supports the contention that had Blair Athol received a • clear run he would have won the Cup. The totalisator handled £74.009 10s. against £73.830 on the coneludina d»v last year- The total for the meeting was £196.190. comnared with £1R«.156 last year, an increase of £8,034. They fared no better m the next race when Great Don failed, and Woe Potts and Worthy Deed both returned grand The. American-bred Josedale Grattan, improved on his first day’s form winning the Australasian Handicap with a fine burst of speed which carried, him from last to first in the last furlong nnd a-half. He was the only first favourite to score during the day. Though he won well on the previous day, Bui B was allowed to return a false price when he won the Lyttelton Handicap, and since joining J. Bryce s stable is a much improved horse. Southern Chief, who was backed down to a short price, looked to ’have the race iri hand when he ran to the front one furlong from home, but again failed to fight on when challenged. Neil Volo appeared from the pace she showed to be a racecourse certainty beaten when she failed to settle down at the start of the Middleton Handicap and then run up and join her field. Captain Bolt had the race won when he went to a bad break near the post and allowed Bittersweet to win and return a big dividend for Mr Barton, his only success at . the fixture. Fine Art was unlucky, to draw the outside position at the start of the Free-for-all and beginning slowly was never able to get a good position. Lawn Derby gave another disappointing display as he broke shortly after the start. The Tasmanian-bred and owned Icevus showed that -her previous day’s win was no fluke by going to the front early and staying on to win and return another false price. The concluding event produced one of the* most thrilling races seen at Addington. Nelson Eddy, a hot favourite, failed to go away, and the leaders were oyer 60yds on the journey before he, struck his gait. His backers were surprised to see h|s'trainer set out after the field.' ’ At the end of half a mile he had run’to the tail, and after remaining there for the next three furlongs ran round the hig field and joined the leaders at the straight entrance. He then drew clear, only to be beaten in the last stride by Waipahi, whose backers were lucky in collecting another good dividend. Nelson Eddy’s performance was one of the best ever seen at Addington.

The Sagamore-Violet Wrack bracket was sent out nearly £IOO better favoured than Native Huon for the Linwood! Handicap, but punters were well astray, as the winner was found in Mohican, who won well and) returned a dvidend of nearly a third of a century. Shadelandl led Native Huon and Reward over the first circuit, and entering the last lap Shadeland was blosely followed by Sagamore, Native Huon, Sister Mary, and Mohican. With three furlongs to go, Sagamore ran to the front and led into the straight from Mohican, Sister Mary, Native Huon, and Violet Wrack. Mohican and Sister! Mary cut : down Sagamore, and what promised to be an-interesting contest was spoiled by Sister Mary skipping about 70yds from the post, .and!, Mohican beat here by two lengths. Native Huon was a similar distance away third, a _ head in ■ front of Sagamore, with Violet Wrack, Sonoma King, and Esealado next »«« * - Great Don was nearly twice as well backed as Quest for the Cashmere Handicap, but though both were well placed over the early stages neither stayed on, and another good dividend was returned when Wee Potts won from two other outsiders. Sports Review, Mongolian, and Parauri were slow to begin, and Loyal Pat and Repeal led out of the straight. Going along the back Bing Crosby was at the head of the others and" entering the last lap Loyal Pat was in charge from Worthy Need. Bing Crosby.. Wee Potts, Great Don. and Sports Review. With three furlongs to go Worthy Deed ran to the front and Great Don. on the outside of Wee Potts, Quest, and Harold Guy were next. Worthy Deed, Wee Potts, and the favourite were about on even terms as they turned into the straight, with Quest and Harold Gn'y next. Once in the straight Wee Potts drew out and won bv two lengths from Harold Guy. who beat Worthy Deed hv half, a length for second place. Bed Pigeon was four lengths awav fourth, then came Great Don "lid Sports Review.

The heavy wagering' on the Australasian Handicap was confined to Josophdale Grattan and Special Edition, the former being about £IOO better fancied and he won well. Special Edition lost several lengths at the start, but owing to the slow pace set he was almost up with Mazaire at the end of- half a mile, and passing the mile post (2min 26sec> this pair were leading Lady Milne,: Mongolian, Privateer. and the favourite. There was still no pace on and with ■ half a mile to go there was .no change in the order. After making the far turn Josephdale Grattan began to move up. and as Mazaire and Snecial Edition turned into the straight on even terms with Lady Miine and Mongolian hist behind them, he was next and wide out in the centre of the course. Over the last furlong the favourite put in a snlendid rtm which landed him the winner bv three lengths from Mnzairc. who beat Snecial Edition by a length. Regal and Ladv Milne were next. . . . Though one* oF tho fields at- the the Louisson Handi-

cap produced tbo most interesting contest, and, despite the wind, Blair Athol ■registered a Now Zealand time record of Smin 11 3-sscc lor a race over a mile and a-half. Groat Jewel was about £SOO better fancied than Donald Dim, Cantata, and Blair Athol, tbo trio bracket, but was unfortunate in losing fully two seconds at the start and also got blocked at the home turn. Village Guy loci out from Cantata, with Donald Dhu and Gallant Knight next, " Colonel Grattan, who also slapped at the start, being last with the favourite. Rocks Ahead moved up going across the top the first time and was on Village Guy’s wheel entering the last lap, with Cantata. Gallant Knight, Donald Dim, and BHr Athol next. At the end of a ir lo Rocks Ahead took charge and led along the back from Blair Athol, Cantata, and Village Guy, who were racing abreast. These four" were' still in charge turning for home, with Rot Luck and Great Jewell next. In a great race to the post Blair Athol beat Pot Luck by a neck, with Great Jewel two lengths further back just beating Cantata. Rocks Ahead and. Donald Dim were next. • » • • Southern Chief was made over £4OO better favourite than Jackaranda lor the Lyttelton Handicap and had every chance, but again failed to stay, while Jackaranda did in his chance by failing to go away, and Bill B. scored his second win at the meeting. Frisco Boy and Frisco Lady, as well as Jackaranda, failed to begin, and Nell Grattan led out from Toorak, and after three furlongs had been covered was showing the way to Renown’s Best and Toorak, then Southern Chief moved up quickly approaching the •beginning ot the last lap. At the end of a railo the favourite raced round the leaders, and at the far turn was clear from Bill 8., with Nell Grattan, Toorak, Horsepower,. and Renown’s Best next. Southern Chief was first into the straight from Bill 8., with Nell Grattan, Horsepower, and Toorak, boxed m on the rails, next. Directly the favourite was tackled he gave in and Bill B. drew out over the last 100yds to win by a length from Nell Grattan, who beat Horsepower by a neck. Southern Chief was a head away fourth, and Toorak and Sandusky were next. • • « » The bracket pair, Captain Bolt and Wahnooka, was about £IOO hett e r fancied than Nell Volo for the Middleton Handicap, but backers of these horses were unlucky as Nell Volo broke badly at the start and Captain Bolt broke when he appeared to have the race in hand less than 100yds from the winning post. Aristotle also broke at the start and Pilot Peter led for about two furlongs and a-half. Bittersweet followed Captain Bolt into the straight the first time. Entering the last lap Capain Bolt was showing the way to Bittersweet, Lament, Royal Romance, and Mute. There was no change in this order as they raced along the back into the straight where Captain Bolt was three lengths clear. Less than 100yds from the post ho broke badly and Bittersweet, driven right out, beat Lament by about half a length. Royal Romance was two lengths away third, followed ,by Mute, Captain Bolt, and Wahnooka.

The Free-for-all was run in a_ howling wind, and in a pool of £10,359 10s, the bracketed pair, Parisienne and Lucky Jack was less than £75 better favourite than Fine Art, who drew the outside of the line at the barrier, but none finished in the money. Lawn Derby started about two lengths behind the line and with Lucky Jack, broke shortly afterwards, and Fine Art was also slow to begin. Gallant Knight was the first to show out from Icevus, Plutus. Windsor Lass, and Rooks Ahead. After two furlongs had been covered, Icevus van to the front and showed the way into the final lap from Galant Knight, Plutus, Windsor Lass, and Rocks Ahead, with Fine Art at the last of the field Icevus continued in charge from Gallant Knight as they raced along the back and was about two lengths clear of Gallant Knight at the entrance to the straight with Pot Luck and Plutus next In the run home Icevus had to be driven right out to beat Gallant Knight by a neck with Pot Luck a length away, third. Parisienne was close up fourth with daylight to Plutiis. Fine Art, and Windsor Lass.

Nelson Eddy, who wa s over £6OO better fancied than Lightning Lady for the Hornby Handicap, tangled badly at the start and lost over 60 yards before striking his gait. Aircraft led out from Wee Pots and Waitaki Power and at the end of half a mile Aircraft was in charge from Wee Potts, Waitaki Power. Waipahi, and Bing Crosby, while the favourite had run up to the tail of the field. Once in the back stretch Nelson Eddy moved up very fast and was on terms with Lightning Lady and- Wee Potts turning into the straight, with Wataki Power and Waipahi next. At the distance the favourite had drawn clear, then Waipahi put in his claim and just got up in the last few strides to beat Nelson Eddy by a short neck. Waitaki Power was two lengths away third, then followed Wee Potts, Subsidy, and Red Pigeon.
