COMBINED RULER, SQUARE, AND SPIRIT LEVEL
You will have much use for this universal tool, especially on small building jobs. Mortise a piece of boarding at right angles into the middle of a board about fin thick, as shown in the sketch. The ruler and square are now finished. The measurements are in centimetres. Mark off a line X-X down the centre of the upright piece of board and at right angles to the ruler. Screw in a large round-headed screw into this line at (a). Point one end of a strip
of sheet iron. Bend the other end loosely round the screw (a) "so that the iron can move easily. When the instrument is to be used as a spirit level, all you have to do is to take care that the sheet iron is in a line with the vertical line, the instrument being placed on the support in the same position as shown in the drawing. At (c) and (d) put in two roundheaded screws, the heads of which project, in order to stop the iron strip from being in the way when the instrument is used as a square.
