OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP HONOURS WITH AMATEURS OPENING DAY’S PLAY fPnu United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 9. At the en'd of the first day’s play in the New Zealand open golf championship the honours are .with the amateurs. Of the 115 players competing only two returned cards equalling Miramar’s scratch score of 74. They are R. H. Glading, of Hamilton, whom many regard as the coming amateur champion of the Dominion, and the unattached professional, J. D. M‘lntosh. It was unfortunate that a gusty northerly wind with driving rain robbed most competitors of their chances of breaking 74, and many tales of misjudged shots were told when the day’s experiences were being related. Three professionals appear in the first ..five, but 11 amateurs,' all under 80, load the next professional. Both last year’s amateur champion, Pax ” Smith, and professional champion, N. H. Fuller, are competing, but Bobby Locke, the holder of the open title, as well as several overseas players who would have attended but for the war, are absent. Although he took only 11 putts for the first nine holes on the outward jourpey, which he finished with the sensational figure of 34 (three under bogey), J. D. M'lntosh provided■ an anti-climax at the eighteenth with a calamitous 6 after taking four putts. Ho was unlucky in missing a 2 at the sixteenth (IGOyds). where he split the pin with an iron shot that finished 9in from the hole. R. H. Glading in the circumstances played immaculate golf, taking 37 both ways. He started _ promisingly by notching two birdies in the first three, blit his chip shots were sometimes erratic, and he finished the first nine in hogev 37 He picked up a stroke at the fourteenth and returned bogey figures for the succeeding holes until the eighteenth, where he dropped a stroke. After an indifferent outward display for 40, I. Ewen, the Hutt champion, who finished fifth in the open last year, made a brilliant recovery,: finishing the second nine in 35. He was on in 2 at the tenth (490yds), and the fifteenth (450yds) against the wind, where, in addition to the eleventh, he recorded birdies. Ho took three putts on the fourteenth, however. Among the veterans, E. S. Douglas, the Otago professional, returned good figures. He was out in 37 and home in 40. He was unlucky to miss a simple putt at the second for a bogey 4, and again at tho sixth. Douglas, however, can always turn on something out _of the ordinary, and he recovered with several birdies to finish with 77. A fairly large gallery .followed “Pax ” Smith and N. H. p uller, last year’s amateur and professional chainpious respectively. Smith’s card to-day read:—Out; 646434645 —41. in: 543434455 — 37. Fuller made amends for a scratchy 44 out by .finishing one better than bogey over the second nine holes. His card read;* —Out: 574543664—44. in; 453355344—36. Guy, popularly known as the “ scientific smiter,” found little difficulty in keeping a good line, but short putts spoilt his chance of getting even further up on the list. The second round of tho open will be played to-morrow, together with the qualifying rounds, and the third and fourth rounds will be decided on Saturday. SHORTAGE OF CADDIES. hi an effort to relieve the urgent problem of caddies, the State Placement Office was asked to provide men, but owing to the fact that tho players would have had to pay 6s 6d a round, most of the competitors enlisted tho services of a friend or did without a caddie. Strangely enough, the number of youngsters present was not sufficient. . , , , . In conjunction with to-day s play in the open and qualifying rounds of the amateur and professional championships, the players competed for the Jellicoe Cup for the best single round in tho open and the Bledisloe Cup for the leading amateur in the open.
