Mr W. Esquilant was a passenger by the express this morning bound for Wellington. • Miss Hetty Carnocnan, adjudicator tor the dancing section of the Competitions, returned to Christchurch this morning. ' Mr J. H. Gilbert, general traffic manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, is on a visit to Dunedin. Dr M. A. if. Barnett has been appointed a member of the Carter Observatory Board for two years. Mr B. Ellis, of Dunedin, Dominion president of the South African nar Veterans’ Association, is visiting Christchurch for the annual Dominion conference. , , v Mr Justice O Regan, who has been on leave after an illness of some months ago, is expected to resume his duties as judge of the Arbitration Court when the court finishes its South Island sittings in about a fortnight’s time. After practising as a children’s medical specialist in Dresden for the past 10 years. Dr C. S. Meyer was compelled to give up his work on account of his Jewish ancestry, and he arrived at Auckland by the Rangltane yesterday to establish himself in New Zealand. Dr Meyer studied in the universities of Berlin, Munich, Heidelberg, and Gotttingen. Before he will be permitted to practise in New Zealand he must study at the Otago Medical School for three years and take a New Zealand medical degree. Captain H. A. Dillner, D.C.M.. superintendent of the Marine Department at Dunedin, who has been promoted to a similar position at Auckland, was met yesterday by his friends connected with snipping, and was the recipient of a barometer, presented by Mr (R. D. Halstead on behalf of those present. Mr Halstead mentioned the high esteem in which Captain Dillner was held, and congratulated him on his promotion, at the same time expressing regret at his departure from Dunedin. Captain Dillner replying, stated that the barometer would serve as a reminder of the many good friends he had made while in Dunedin. ■ Messrs F. W. Furkert, F. E. Greenish, E. V. Blake, T. Jordan, W. Marshall, S. Blackley, and J. W. A. Heenan have b.%on accepted members of the Town Planning Board for a period of three years. In addition, the board const ts of the Minister of Internal Affairs, who is chairman, the director of town planning, the surveyor- * general, the engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, and the Government architect. At the meeting of the Hospital Board last night the chairman (Mr J. W. Dove) referred to the illness of the Prime Minister,, and the following resolution was carried unanimously:— “ That the Otago Hospital Board extends its sympathy to the Prime Minister, upon.his recent illness, exSis its pleasure on the newspaper reports that he is on tl» road to recovery, and trusts that he will soon be • restored to_ the best of health, and resume his official duties.” In the North Canterbury to North Otago elimination contest for the Dame Melba scholarship Miss Beryl Gough, of Sumner, gained the award at the Ashburton competitions to-day.
