Trainer Changes Quarters. Tooley Street was left at Riccarton after the Grand National'meeting, and his owner-trainer, H. Rama, is expected to make that centre his headquarters shortly. He is to return with Miss Appellant and a two-year-old by Foxbridge shortly.

Viking’s Sister. Bere Regis, who is engaged at the Otago Hunt meeting, .is a three-year-old filly by Lord Warden from Anthem, and thus ranks as a sister to the Riverton sprinter Viking.

Likes Soft Going. 6. H. Withers is keeping Donadea at strong work in view of a trip south next week for the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting. Donadea is very well and may race ■ well on the trip, as he is partial to soft ground. Lord Midas Due for a Win.

G. Ridgway has Lord Midas and Pink Dress engaged at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting, where they will be ridden by A. Messervy. They are in good order, and Lord Midas, after a number of placed efforts, is due for an early win.

Auckland Trotting Meeting. The betting on the Auckland Trottnig Club’s Spring Meeting to-morrow will be on the win and place system.

Duke of Gloucester Cup. Mr G. G. Beatson, who won the Grand National Steeplechase on Padishah, will ride Halley in the Duke of Gloucester Cup to be run at New Plymouth next month.

Officials Appointed. The South Canterbury Jockey Club has reappointed the following officials for the current season:—Handicapper, Mr C. E. Hassall; starter, Mr P. D. M‘Nab; and judge, Mr A. Dickson.

New Zealand Trotting Derbies. Nominations for the 1941 New Zealand -Derby will close with the secretary of the- New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club on September 1. at which time the second payment of £3 for thia year’s Derby will also fall due. Another Sale Ring Bargain.

Mustella, who won the Australian Steeplechase at Caulfield last Saturday, is owned by the Warnambool trainer* J. Maloney, who gave only 40 ghineas for him in 1935. During the last two seasons the horse has won £2,255 in stakes. * Half-sister to Wild Chase. Wild Fox % who is likely to be the Clifford representative in the John Grigg Stakes, to be run at Ashburton on September 16, is a half-sister to Wild Chase, by Foxbridge. She is also engaged in the M'Lean Stakes, to be run at Wingatui in October. ' Dunedin Classics. For the M’Lean Stakes and Dunedin guineas, to be run at the spring meeting at Wingatui, the Chokebore Lodge stable will be represented by Wild Fox in the former and Winning Kival and Great Swoop in the Guineas. On account of Mr G. 11. Macdonald this stable’s team may also include Shikari for the M'Lean Stakes and Scold for the Guineas. A Likely Steeplechaser. King Willow, who is engaged in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase next week with 9.3, is a good type to make a jumper. He is a big upstanding gelding by Woodend from Kilrhine, by Kilrain from Rhine Gold by Gipsy Grand, and now rising 10 years old. He has some fair form on the flat to recommend him, and since being hunted with the Birch wood Hounds has shown good form in his schooling tasks at Invercargill. A Well-bred Foal. One of Mr J. R. M’Kenzie’s latest importations, Windsor Volo, on Wednesday foaled a filly to Abbedale. By Peter Volo from Widow Grattan, by Grattan Royal, Widow Volo was mated in America to New Zealand time, and the foal will be a welcome addition to the bloodstock in New Zealand. Abbedale is one of the leading stallions in America, and the sire of four pacers that' have done a mile in two minutes or faster. Willow Wave’s Dam. Mr John Magee, of Nightcaps, writes to the ‘ Southland News ’; — “In regard to the breeding of Willow Wave, it may not be generally known that I brought the dam of Willow Wave to Southland and I could not see euch a brilliant pacer retire from racing without comment. The dam of Willow Wave was bred by O’Connor Bros., of Ngapara (near Oamarul, and she was oy Young M'Kinney out of a hack mare called Minnie, who was half-thoroughbred. I sold her to James Robertson, who in turn disposed of her fco Mr Harry Huii• ’I ot .Ardlussa (near Balfour), who bred Willow Wave.”

TROTTING. August 26.—Auckland T.C. , September 2,—New Brighton T.C. September 20, 23. —Wellington T.C. September 30.—Methven T.C. October 7.—New Brighton T.C. October 21, 23.—Grey mouth T.C. October 21, 23, or 25.—Auckland T.O. October 23. —Oamaru T.C. October 25, 28.—Wellington T.O. October 25, 28.—Invercargill T.C. November 7,9, 10.—N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. November 23, 25. —Forbury Park T.C.

Dam of Gallio Dead. Prodiee, whose death is reported from Te Awamutu, was bred in 1925 by Dr E. H. B. Milsora, and won over £B,OOO in stakes. She was by Catmint from Hyades and half-sister to Ammon Ra. Prolyxo, Anion, and others, while an older full sister was Phaola. Prodice is a striking example of a high-class racing mare who was equally successful at the stud, having in her short ca'reer produced Gallio and Te Hero. The New Zealand Trotting Cup. Generally well informed regarding the control of trotting affairs, the ‘Star-Sun’ says: “An endeavour is being made to frame new conditions for the next New Zealand Trotting Cup. Officials hope to confine the field to 12 starters and eliminate horses that arc past their best. In all probability the right of nomination by owners will be removed, and only horses invited by the committee will be allowed l to compete. One scheme considered provides for a special handicap with special penalties, but it is doubtful if this will receive the approval of the authorities, as it contravenes the handicapping rules.

Weil Handicapped. In the Pentlow flack Handicap at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting last month, run over a mile and 35yds, Hunting Chorus gave Dancing Flame 11b and stood her up half a dozen, lengths at the turn for home, and then only failed to catch her by half a length. With 8.2 (111 b less) on his back Hunting Chorus would only have to begin smartly to beat all but. Flame Queen in-the Vauxhall Handicap to be run over six furlongs at Wingatui next week. In the Pentlow Handicap he conceded Prince Ruenalf. who finished some distance back in fifth place, 121 b, but in next week’s race meets him on 6lb better terms. This hahdicapping is very difficult to follow. Another for the Duke.

Referring to the cable advice received yesterday to the effect that the Earl of Derby had presented Greenwich to the Duke of Kent, to be added to the select team his Royal Highness will race in Australia, this horse is by Fairway from Rose Red by Swynford. Last season he started seven times for two wins and a similar number of seconds and thirds. At Newmarket he won the Hastings Stakes and the Great Foal Stakes, both of a mile and a-quarter. He was rnnner-up to Golden Sovereign in the Newmarket Stakes and to River Prince in the Breeders’ St. Leger, run at Derby. .... _ Greenwich was'shipped to Melbourne on August 15. and like Dhoti and Moon Ray, will be trained by J. Holt. Will Be Fancied. Although he won only ■ one race, Silver Stick was one of the best of last season’s two-year-olds, and he wound up by running second with 9.6 at Ellerslie in the autumn. After a period of rest and steady work, he is commencing to move along faster at Ellerslie. and the effortless manner in which he is recording fast sprints augurs well for his prospects. He is still eligible for the hack class, and should he an excellent prospect for the Champion Plate at Avondale next month.

Likely to be Favourite. Good reports continue about the progress of the northern maiden Belfast Jack, and he is not likely to be at any fancy price when he contests the Mount Eden Handicap at the Auckland Tueeting to-morrow.. He has had only one race to date, but on that occasion impressed by the convincing manner in which he came on in the straight to fill fourth place. It is reasonable to expect the experience to have benefited him considerably, and he should have a bright future. He is a half-brother by Jack Potts to Regal Voyage (4min 19 4-ssec), both pacers being out of the Logan Pointer mare Logan Princess.

Looking for a Two-minute Pacer. South Australia may soon have a two-minute pacer. Mr W. H. Dring, an Adelaide owner, is in America negotiating for the purchase of a horse with this record. His intention is to establish a breeding establishment, but he may be tempted to allow the horse to show his speed on Adelaide tracks. Mr Bring has spent thousands of pounds in trotting stock. He gave a big price for Electric Boy. Another for whom he paid a big price was Torqnemada, a full brother to the New Zealand champion. Indianapolis.

John Grigg Stakes Candidates. The John -Grigg Stakes candidates Noko. (Sir Simper—Dark Marie) and Wild Coon (Nigger Minstrel—Miss Redowa) and the Nigger Minstrel three-year-old Mondello were allowed to sprint three furlongs from a barrier start at Invercargill on Tuesday, and all three made a smart beginning and showed pleasing speed. Noko and Wild Coon have been exercised and given plenty of barrier practice throughout the winter, and both are well forward for this time of the year in Southland. Mondello has also been in for some time, and looks like coming to hand early. She.is booked to make her first appearance as a three-year-old in the President’s Handicap at the Otago Hunt Meeting on Saturday week. To Race To-morrow.

A feature of the Moorcfield meeting on Saturday was an exhibition gallop by the three-year-old colt Reading. Carrying A. Knox, and going alone from a standing start, he ran five furlongs in Imin 2sec. The race record for the track is Imin 3sec, and as Reading accomplished his task with ease, he created a big impression. Reading was the best colt of his year last season, one of his victories being over High Caste in the A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes. .Between seasons he suffered a severe illness, but prompt attention averted disaster, and it is clear that he is already near the top of his form. He will have Ijis first race to-morrow in the Hobartville Stakes, in which no doubt he will meet High Caste. Rcau Repaire, and other three-year-olds being prepared for the Derby.
