RECITAL AT COMPETITIONS Paul Schramm, the brilliant pianist who recently made his home in the Dominion, will give a recital in His Majesty’s Theatre to-morrow night as part of the programme at the Dunedin Competitions Society’s festival. Mr Schramm is acting as judge of the instrumental music, and it is not often that the public has tho opportunity of listening to a pianist of his undoubted genius during the course of a programme that is generally provided by amateur artists. Mr Schramm has chosen a varied programme for his recital to-morrow night, and his three groups will include mimbes by both the old masters and more modern composers. The F minor sonata of Beethoven’s, tho brilliant ‘ Appasionata ’; a bracket of Chopin numbers, including the sparkling ‘ Heroic ’ polonaise, tho G flat major waltz, and tho lovely Nocturne iu D flat major; all these will undoubtedly Lave an appeal for those who delight in the works of these classic composers; while on the more modern side Mr Schramm will play two Debussy numbers—‘ General Lavine, Eccentric ’ and ‘ La Cathedral© Engloutie ’ —Ravel’s ‘ Tho Valley of Bells,’ and 1 Marche Grotesque,’ by Prokofieff,

Mr Schramm’s recitals have always a novql freshness about them in that he tells his audience what he thinks they should know of the numbers he plays, and bis appearance to-morrow night should prove of considerable benefit to tho competitors whom he has been judging, as well ns being a delightful entertainment lor the audience- The finals of some of the more important classes in the festival, including the contest for the Barling Rose Bowl, the finals of the Gilbert and Sullivan contest, will also bo features of the evening session.
