BUSES OR TRAMS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —My attention has been drawn to remarks made by Or Gibson concerning a letter addressed by me to His Worship tho Mayor and the city councillors. The letter referred to is not substantially different in its .terms from the statements made by mo when I addressed the mayor and councillors on July 18 last. When asked by the mayor whether he wished to ask any questions upon that occasion Or Gibson declined to do so. As Cr Gibson is evidently somewhat displeased I leave it to the public to decide whether the appended (copy) letter contains more than a reasonable statement of objections which the council specifically asked for by advertisement.—l am, etc., William H. Carson. August 24. [Enclosure.] To the Mayor and Councillors of the Dunedin City Council. I, William Heritor Carson, of Dunedin, solicitor, being a resident of tho city of Dunedin, do hereby give you notice that I object to the application proposed to be made to tho Local Government Loans Board for sanction to the borrowing of the sum of £6,500 for the purpose of purchasing motor omnibuses upon the grounds—(a) That the council has not paid due regard to a petition having reference to the retention of the existing tramways system, which said petition was presented to the council on the 17th day of July, 1939, and is signed by more than 2,200 residents of this city, at least 1,600 of whom are also ratepayers enrolled upon the ratepayers’ roll of the city. (b) That inasmuch as the special report upon which is based tho transport policy of the council will not stand a critical analysis, the council is not justified in borrowing money for purposes which may result merely in additional financial burdens being placed upon the ratepayers of this city. (c) That before the policy of tho council is implemented the state of the city transport services and the conduct thereof should be fully investigated by independent persons competent to express an opinion and to advise thereon. This objection is lodged by me in a representative as well as a personal capacity. Dated at Dunedin this 21st day of August, 1939.
