FIRE AT RABAUL
BUSINESS PREMISES DESTROYED DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £60,000 Preia Association—By Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, August 23. A Rabaul message reports that the W. (R. Carpenter Company’s store, a three-story building, was destroyed by fire to-day. Most of the local records relating to expropriated German properties were also consumed. However, the main records relating to these properties, of an aggregate value of £2,500,000, are housed at Canberra. Carpenter’s premises burned like tinder. Fire also destroyed the adjoining premises of a local baker, a dentist, a solicitor, and an accountant. The damage is estimated at £60,000.
