CONVERTED CAR'S CAREER
FOUR YOUNG MEN IN LIQUOR SERIOUS ACCIDENT [Pelt United Press Association.] HASTINGS. August 21. A sequel to the career of converted ear, during which a Napier nightwatehmnn was knocked down and injured, was the appearance in the Napier Magistrate’s Court to-day of Joseph Meehan? asrod 22, Gustaf Albert Peterson aged 22. and Janies Edward Forne. all of Napier. They wore charged with
unlawful conversion of a car. A fourth man, Vivian Harvey Were, aged 25. of Putorino, was charged with unlawful conversion of a car, intoxication in charge, and failing to stop and render all possible aid after an accident. Were was remanded for three weeks, as the injured man is still in hospital. Outlining the case, Detective-ser-geant H. Nuttall said that the four men had been drinking. Later the proposition of taking a car was discussed, and finally one was removed from near the Municipal Theatre. At a later stage Were was left on his own in tbe car, and it was while he wgs driving round the streets that a nightwatchnian was knocked over and injured. Meehan, Peterson, and Forue elected to be dealt with by the lower court. They pleaded guilty. Forne was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour, and Peterson and Meehan each to three mouths with hard labour.
