SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Ooa Correspondent.]

STATISTICAL. While the rainfall in South Otago centres for July was very high, Owaka’s total of 10.68 in easily takes the lead, in July last year the fall recorded in Owaka was 2.48iu, and last month’s fall is the heaviest recorded since 1935. The previous heaviest fall recorded was 7.92 in, in February, 1937. Vital Statistics for Owaka.—For July: Births 1 (1938 nil); deaths 1 (I); marriages nil (nil). For Kaitangata; Births 2, deaths 2. marriages 1. SOUTH OTAGO COURSING CLUB. At a meeting of the above club last night arrangements were completed for the Gold Memorial Shield event, to be held on August 12, a maiden stake also to be run. Entries close on August 9. ■ Mr E. G. Price (Dunedin) was appointed .judge. The President reported that the hares had stood the recent rough weather well, only one death being reported. CLUTHA SCOTTISH SOCIETY. The annual concert under the auspices of the Glutha Scottish Society was held in the Britannia Theatre last night. Unfortunately, the attendance was not up to expectations, no doubt owing to the rough state of the roads due to the recent weather. The programme was presented by a party of Dunedin artists, and was of a very high standard. Chief D. Ballantyne presided, aud Senior Chieftain A. E. Russell introduced the party. Those contributing to the programme were: Misses Mary Pratt, Jean M‘Lay, and Betty Pocock, Messrs Archie Jones, John Gordon, Ivan Hanna, Roy M'Dougall, Roy Kerr, and Chas M'Arthur, while Misses E. Bevan, I. Robertson, Messrs James Flett, and Keith Cameron contributed national dances. The accompanistes were Miss J. M'Lay and Mrs D. Brown, while Piper L. Copland provided the dance music. BALCLUTHA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Mr H. Holgate presided at the monthly meeting last night. Miss Tui Gall tendered her resignation as assistant, and this was accepted with regret. The secretary of the Benhar School Committee wrote asking the Balclutha Committee to arrange a conference of delegates from the school committees of South Otago to discuss the question of forming a sub-branch of the School Committees’ Association. It was decided to arrange the conference to be held in Balclutha School on September 9, representatives of the Otago School Committees’ Association to be invited to attend. The head master (Mr A. Ha") reported that the roll number at the end of last week was 356, but owing to the wintry conditions the attendance had not been as good as usual and the school had been closed on four days on account of the snow. Early in July Inspectors R. B. Clarke, A. C. Rowe, and J. 11. M Finlayson had carried out their annual inspection of the school. Miss R. Macalister, adviser to the infant and kindergarten schools, had visited the school that day and demonstrated modern practices in the infant room, particularly with regard to speech training. ~ The final of the A grade Rugby between schools was to be played between Balclutha and Kaitangata to-day. Used telephones could now be obtained from the Post Office at a very low cost, and he considered it would be a decided advantage to have them installed in all rooms.—The; report was received and it was decided to make inquiries from the Postal Department regarding the installation of telephones at the, school. The inspector’s report was considered very satisfactory, aud a motion of appreciation to the head master and staff was carried. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Jas. Wood for assistance given iii erecting the basketball posts. The Head Master reported that the second term holidays would commence on August 18, and ' it was decided to carry out certain improvements at the school during the vacation. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. Last night the Balclutha Miniature .Rifle Club shot an interclub fixture with Waiwera Club on the local range, the home club again proving the winners in all three grades. The usual club shoot was conducted in conjunction with the interclub shoot, and the A grade button went to C. Falconer with a score of 79 off the rifle, while N.
