CANADIAN PORT FINANCE. The annual report of the Canadian National Harbours Board shows a further decrease in expenditure, together with an increase in revenue. Operating expenses have been cut by 912,000 dollars in the past three years. Since 1935, when control of ports by local bodies was superseded by the present form of management, there has been a net improvement in the operating position of Canadian ports of about 2,200,000 dollars. This is partly due to increased revenue arising out of higher port charges and an increased volume of traffic. Operating revenue in 1938 totalled 8.742,456 dollars, compared with 8.262,221 dollars in 1937 and 7,427,455 dollars in 1935. Despite the larger volume of traffic moving through the ports, operating expenses in 1938 fell to 4,064,709 dollars, a reduction of 912,000 dollars from the 1935 level. The net income deficit in 1935, after charging interest on outstanding debt and providing 788,339 dollars for reserve for replacements, was 5,744,458 dollars. In 1938, after charging interest on debt and 1,923,348 dollars for reserve for replacements, the net income deficit was 4,850,533 dollars. AT OTHER PORTS.
