NATIVE BUSH.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I quite agree with " Kowhai " " Beauty Lover,'* and " Bewildered " that the time lias come to put a stop to all this vandalism going on in Leitb. Valley above Duke street. The destruction of our native bush is scandalous. A natural beauty that other cities would be proud of and protect, we have to be robbed of, or it is stripped and tailored to suit some friend or friends who grudge us this beauty. To terrace the hillside and plant flowers is what any city might do to beautify a barren place, but here there is no need, for man's puny efforts can never improve on natural beauty. What is to hinder the first good rainstorm from washing the terraces all away? Wake up, citizens, and protect your lovely bush, too much of which, alas, has been destroyed already. What is our City Council thinking of to allow such wanton destruction.—l' am, etc.. JIATEP.Wni. July 24. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Along with " Beauty First " 1 can safely echo the statement that, Amenities Society or no Amenities Society, there are hundreds of citizens who are justly and as much interested in native bush in and around Duncdin as well as outlying districts as they, and in their own way have done and are doing more good. What is wanted is no further destruction of our native bush. " Beauty_ First "_ asks: What are these amenities societies, who comprises them, and how elected? He only requires to attend one of their annual meetings to_ find out. At the last general meeting of the Dunedin Amenities Society the chairman mentioned that more members were required and that the secretary had sent > out 400 circulars. One asks the question: Why 400, and to whom did they go? lam certain " Beauty First " did not receive one, nor did the writer of this communication. This, however, by the ■way. What is wanted is vision. How many have it in this city? I write in support of our beautiful native bush and its protection.—l. am, etc., July 24. Scaxdia.
