JAPAN'S DEMANDS WATERED DOWN
BRITISH RECOGNITION OF WAR CONDITIONS LONDON, July 21. (Received July 22, at 10.30 a.m.) The British United Press Tokio correspondent says Sir Robert Craigie and Mr Arita have agreed to a formula for the negotiations over the Tientsin issue. Sir Robert Craigie has sent a copy of the agreement, consisting of a single paragraph, to London. It is understood that Japan’s original demands have been somewhat watered down, but the agreement satisfies the demand that Britain should recognise that war conditions exist in China, also the difficulties under which the Japanese army is operating. The correspondent of the Associated Press in Great Britain in Tokio says it is understood that Sir Robert Craigie’s concessions relate to the assistance to China which is justified under the Nine-Power Treaty.
