Nine young members of the Irish Republican Army who are serving long sentences in Dartmoor for participation in the recent bomb outrages have been virtually excommunicated by tho Roman Catholic Church. Canon Ryan, the prison chaplain and a native of Cork, with the knowledge of Bishop Barrett, of Plymouth, refused the prisoners the Sacrament, telling the men that the church sternly condemned all secret societies which plotted against the church and tho State.
The relatives contemplate appealing to Homo, alleging spiritual persecution and asking that the convicts be treated purely as political prisoners.
