TERRITORIAL RECRUITING
DUNEDIN TOTAL EXCEEDS 300 WEEK'S INCREASE 26 Sinco the Prim© Minister made his appeal for recruits for the territorial Army a total of 310 men lias been taken on the strength of local -units. The last week, ended yesterday, saw a total of 2C recruits enrolled in tbo city. The following figures show the number of recruits taken on the strength of the various units since the Ministerial appeal was made, while in parentheses is shown the increase for the last week: —Otago Mounted Rifles, 54 (0); 12th and 14th Batteries, 71 Q 0); Otago Regiment, 135 (14); Scottish Company, 10 (0); Dunedin Section. Southern District Signal Company, 3 (0) ; Otago University Medical Company, 37 (2). ARTILLERY UNITS. Until recently the 12th (Field) Battery and the 14th (Medium) Battery have been restricted in their recruiting activities as both have been for some time up to the peace establishments, pins 25 per cent, excess. In fact, both batteries have had a waiting list of those desirous of joining. Authority was given these units at the end of last week to expand to war establishments; this entails such a considerable augmentation of their numerical strength that after those on the waiting list have been taken on strength there will still be vacancies in both batteries for recruits of the right type. A further effect of the increase to war establishment will bo that opportunities for promotion will occur, especially in the n.c.o. rank, so that there are prospects for those showing ability. At present the 12th Battery requires an additional 20 men and the 14th Battery 15 men. Intending recruits should apply at Central Battery, St. Kilda, on Monday or Wednesday nights.
