HUTT VALLEY GARDENERS
SUPPORT FOR PROTEST AGAINST EVICTION [Pee Dnmm Peess Association.] WELLINGTON, July 20. The Government’s proposal to take the Hutt Valley market; gardening lands for housing purposes was roundly condemned to-day at the conference of the New Zeuiland market gardeners. Apart from the ethical' Aspect, tha opinion was expressed that it would be uneconomic to shift the gardeners, as any transportation to a more distant area would inevitably result in an increased price to the consumers. It wa» further claimed that any ehAnge would put the gardeners back! at least 10 years in their work and that the Hint Valley was the only .location for gardens to supply the Wellintgon market with vegetables, whereas other land was available for houses.' The conference passed a resolution expressing full sympathy with the protest recently lodged by the commercial gardeners of Hutt Valley. . ,
