BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting yesterday afternoon of the Otago High Schools Board was attended by the chairman (Mr W. R. Brugh) Mrs D. G. lan, Messrs J. C U. Somerville, D. U. Cameron, J. Robertson, and F. U. Campbell. COR RESPON DEX CE. The formation of terraces on * the Littlebourne ground was the subject of a letter from the town clerk, who advised the board that approval had now been received from the Government for this work to bo done.— Noted. A proposal that application be made to the department lor a grant for tin; purchase of equipment for use in the electricity classes costing £55 os (English price) was made by the Rector of the Otago Boys’ High School.—The fact that 60 per cent, would have to he added to this price was pointed out. The application for the grant is to be made to the department. Owing to the available supplies being taken by the primary schools, and also because of a shortage, the Health Department advised the board that milk for consumption at the Otago Boys’ High and the King’s High Schools would not bo available until August. An alternative suggestion—that the schools be supplied with malted milk powder—was not accepted by the board. An application from the Principal of the Girls’ High School for the conversion of the old sewing room into a geography and history room was referred to the board’s architect. PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS. —Otago Boys’ High.— The Rector of the Otago Boys’ High School (Mr H. P. Kidson) reported that the total number now on the school roll was 403. The corresponding totals for July, 1934-63 were, respectively, 747, 090, 543, 432, and 388. Winter activities were in full swing. There were 12 teams in.the Rugby, four in the Association, and four in the hookey competitions. This was a far greater proportion of the boys than when the school was larger. The winter term was also the busiest term for some of the other clubs. There were 112 boys in the various sections of the Dramatic Club and 70 in the Debating Club The party of boys and masters that visited Wellington College had a most interesting and enjoyable trip. They were entertained most generously by the head master and boys of the college ami by the High School old boys in Wellington. The first fifteen suffered a severe defeat. The junidr team, playing a team of boarders, just managed to win. It was intended to invite a party of Wellington College boys and masters down to this school next year. The second fifteen played a game against Waimate High School on July 12, winning by a narrow margin after a particularly bright and interesting game. The hockey eleven played . a game against Gore High School on June 28. the Gore team winning after a very close game. The report was adopted. —King’s. High.—

The . Rector of: the King’s High School (Mr D. S. Chisholm) reported that the school roll totalled 309. The totals for the corresponding periods the previous three! years were 193, 240, and 301 respectively. Steady progress .had been -maintained, and the usual term examinations would be held. Mr Crimp: won Id return, to duty on July 24, when Mr Pilling would terminate his temporary engagement. Messrs Aldridge and Hogg, of the Dunedin Training College, were assisting in the school work. Football activity had been somewhat hampered by the weather. A junior team visited Palmerston, and was successful in a match against the District High School team. The second fifteen defeated the South Otago High School team in the animal match. Arrangements had been made for the first fifteen, to play, several other school matches. The fives courts had been completed, and were proving 'very popular. The new football grounds were in very fair order for a first season of play. The report was adopted. —Otago Girls’ High.—

The Principal, of the Otago Girls’ High School (Miss M. H. M. King) reported that the school roll totalled 435. The totals for the corresponding periods the previous four years were 523, 545. 555, and CGB. The apart from absence lists of 72 and 9< on the stormy days of last week, bad been good. Bast month the staff- entertained the mothers of girls in the fifth and sixth forms. The visitors expressed their gratification at their entertainment and at the opportunity afforded of discussing with the teachers many questions concerning their daughters’ progress and future. Next term, it was proposed to entertain the mothers of the fourth forms, while retaining also the usual reception to parents and friends, with display ol school work, at the end of the year. The new sewing room was approaching completion, and promised to be a very helpful addition to the school modation. The report was adopted.
