THE MIDDLE EAST
DEFENCE ARRANGEMENTS NEW OFFICE CREATED (British Official Wireless.) Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, July 20, (Received July 21, at 11 a.m.) Lieutenant-general Sir Archibald Saveli has been appointed to the newlycreated post of general officer command-ing-in-chief to command the British land forces in the Middle East. His functions will be in peace time to supervise the preparation of the defence plans of those forces, and in war time to co-ordinate their actions. The ‘ Daily Telegraph ’ says the recent commitments to Turkey and Greece increase the responsibility that Britain already has in the Middle East, and in those circumstances it is an elementary precaution to create a new office specially charged with the defence of an area vital to Empire communications. The military correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ says the step is a wise one.
