MINERAL OIL

BIG EXPANSION IN BRITISH THROUGHPUT FOUR YEARS' REFINERY STATISTICS RISE IN CRUDE PETROLEUM AND SHALE TREATED -The total throughput of mineral oil refineries in Great Britain during 1938 increased by 8,700,000 gallons to ,629,800,000 gallons compared with 1937. The crude petroleum and shale oil treated showed a rise of 36,500,000 gallons, but the quantity of partly refined products submitted to-treatment declared by 27,800,000 gallons. Imports of crude petroleum during the past year, totalled 567,900,000 gallons. This showed an increase of 40,600,000 gallons, compared with the previous year. - Statistics published by the ' Board of Trad© Journal' show that the total throughputs of the refineries for the past four years were as follows, crude oil *and naptha produced- in this country from shale being shown in addition to imported petroleum: —^

Although the total throughput of the refineries increased by nearly 9,000,000 gallons as compared with 1937, the quantity of liquid products obtained was slightly lower, than in that. year. The output of motor spirit declined by 25,400,000 gallons compared with 1937 (21 per. cent.)* kerosene decreased by 12,800,000 gallons (33 per cent.), and gas oil by 5,900,000 gallons (12 per cent.). v MORE FUEL OILS. An increase in the output of the refineries was recorded in respect of fuel and diesel oils, which rose by 35,300,-000-gallons (18 per cent.). Slight increase* were also recorded in the case of " other spirit " and lubricating oils. The output of liquid products of the

Records going back to 1934 indicate that this total has not been previously equalled in any month earlier than July. Total imports for the first four months of this year are 434.600,000 gallons, against 418,500,000 gallons for the corresponding four months of last vear and 408,700,000 gallons for 1937.
