Yesterday’s meeting was an interesting one. Mr T. 'D. Pearson, secretary of the Clutha district R.S.A., wrote thanking members for assistance riven with Poppy Day. It was decided to again arrange a “ bay ” at the Balclutha Horticultural Society’s spring show. Miss Laing presented a report. on proceedings at the recent federation meeting. The demonstration and talk oh tatting and shadow 'quilting as given by Mrs Adam Begg •was most interesting, and some beautiful samples of work were handed rbund. The points competitions for the meeting were carrots and parsnips, and a very fine display of both was seen. In carrots the awards were; Mrs J. T. Sutherland 1, Mrs Anderson 2, Mrs J. Smith and Mrs G. Guest (equal) 3. •Parsnip awards were: Mrs Sutherland 1, Mrs Guest 2, Mesdames Smith and Newson (equal). 3. A meeting of those interested ■ in the work of the New Zealand) Bed Cross Society was held last night, when the mayor (Mr J. H. Stevenson) presided over an attendance of about 30, including visitors from Warepa and other outside districts. The Chairman explained that when the organiser (Mr Bridlger) had visited the district it had been decided to form a branch in Balclutha, and the meeting that night was to elect a committee. He had been asked if the work of the society would clash with the St. John Ambulance, and, as far as he knew, the interests would not clash, and! there was room for both organisations. The St. John Ambulance was a British organisation, while the Red Cross Society was international. The local division of the St. John Society was doing good work in first aid and nursing, and it would be possible to co-opt it with the new organisation. The work of the Red Cross embraced a wider sphere than the St. John, and talking the matter, over with others, it had been suggested that members of the committee be elected with a view to having someone to take charge of different activities. They would all realise the necessity and value of being prepared and organised in the event of some calamity or emergency arising. He expressed l pleasure at the attendance, which showed that more than a passing interest was being taken in the work of the society. He specially welcomed the visitors from outside, and said their assistance would be very welcome. The meeting then proceeded to elect the committee, as follows:—President, Mr A. K. Baxter; secretary, Mr S. G. Brown; treasurer, Mr E. B. Lothian; executive—Mr J. P. Lyall (accommodation) ; Mr M. Campbell (food supplies) ; Drs D. G. Radclift'e and D. M. Frengley (medical aid) ; representatives of St. John Ambulance, Swimming Club, and Fire Brigade (rescue work); Mr L. Egarr (registration); representatives from Health Department and South Otago Hospital Board (public health); representative South Otago Transport Alliance (transport); Mr G. N. Bell (finance); representatives W.I. and Plunket Society (clothing) ; Mesdames G. N. Bell, TV. Roy, A. I. Miller, J. F. Aysou (Warepa), A. J. Bell (Stirling), Miss B. Anderson (nursing). These committees were given power to add' to their numbers, and it was also suggested that in the adjacent centres small individual committees be set up to carry out local arrangements in case of floods or some other major emergency. Mr Baxter thanked! those present for attending, and impressed upon the executive members the necessity ’ for getting to work and organising their respective sections. TABLE TENNIS.
