STATE APPOINTMENTS
PRIME MINISTER ANSWERS CRITICISMS [Special to the ■ Star.’ - ) WELLINGTON, June 14. Criticism of the Government that it judged itself to be above the law in illegally appointing Mr Hunter (exmember for Manawatu) as liaison officer in the Labour Departments drew the comment from the Prime Minister that the Government did not judge itself above the law, but it took a com mon sense view That is that the law was made for the purpose of helping people '* It is fair that people should obey the law.” said Mr Savage,-“but we cannot all be wise, like Mr Holland Sometimes they break the law uncon sciously. Mr Hunter is one of the most qualified men ever appointed for that particular job, and if he cannot hold Hie position I say it is a pity.” Mr Savage also mentioned Mr Barnes u x-memher for Waitaki) who was appointed to the State Advances Corporation as he knew what was required in a State institution dealing not only with local bodies, but with farmers and all sorts of individuals “ When the Government made an appointment to any administrative position it would,” added Mr Savage, “ be forgiven for wanting the law to be administered, realising that it was not likely to get success unless the work was done by a man knowing what was required.”
