QUALITY CATTLE FIRM

OTHER GRADES DROP £1 FAT LAMBS MAINTAIN SCHEDULES BIG YARDING AT BURNSIDE Though prime heavy cattle maintained late rates throughout the auction at Burnside to-day, owing to a scarcity of this quality, medium grades and light and unfinished descriptions failed to keep up to the level after the first few offerings, with the result that there were decreases for these amounting to £1 a bead at times. There was a larger yarding after the double sale a fortnight ago, which delayed other auctions because of the late finish. Fat sheep had not been offered at the time of going to press, likewise store cattle. Fat lambs maintained recent rates.

As usual, there was a big proportion of the large yarding of 449 head of fat cattle of light and unfinished types, tailing to rubbishy sorts, in all classes. Tops of the entry were of good butchers’ quality, while there were some attractive mediums. Taken by and large, the entry could be classed as a good one for the time of the year. No appreciable variations in value on late rates were recorded over all. despite the large number forward at the opening of the market. While heavy cattle maintained these rates, medium sorts had shown a drop of up to £1 a head nearing the conclusion. Wright, Stephenson, and Co. Pride of place in the fat- cattle sale was shared by J. Dow, of West Taieri, and Mr Smales, of Moa Flat, with £l6 17s 6d. Butchers’ wethers and ewes were few in the large entry of fat sheep, the former being predominant The bulk of the yarding comprised medium to light sorts of both classes, while there was a big tailing of unfinished sorts. None had been offered at the time of going to press.

Competition for dealers was keen, there being about 50 head forward. Prices exceeded those at the last auction by os to 10s Selections of the entry brought £5 15s; medium sorts, from £3 to £4 10s; and light descriptions, from £2 to £2 15s.

Several pens of three and four-year-old cattle from the Lakes District were included in a large entry of store cattle. Owing to the large fat cattle yarding, the Sale bad not begun at the time of going to press. . Though nearing the end of the season. fat lambs yarded were generally of ordinary class, but good descriptions offered met with a ready disposal, bringing to 26s 6d Other grades were not in demand by butchers, but maintained schedules.

There were 151 fat pigs forward, and 23 stores, but prices were not available.
