BRIGADE NOTES HILLSIDE AMBULANCE DIVISION. At the fortnightly meeting of the above division Superintendent J. Penson presided over a good attendance of members A discussion took place on the first-aid competitions amongst members It was decided to commence the competitions at the nest meeting. Members realise that if they are trained in A.R.P work their services will be most valuable in times of calamity or national disaster After general business the diagnosis and improvising competition was commenced. For this competition there was an excellent number of entries, and judging by the keenness displayed these competitions are very popular Competition work is one of .the main factors in increasing the efficiency of the ambulance men District-officer Swanson and Corps-offi-cer D. Maclean were the judges. BALCLUTHA DIVISION. That renewed interest is being shown in St. John Ambulance Brigade work is evidenced by the increased attendance at the division’s classes. Last week, in the absence of Superintendent Hayward, the assistant commissioner, Mr W Pirrett. was in the chair A welcome was extended to District Superintendent Rose and Mrs Rose, of the West Coast District. Congratulations were extended to Mrs W. D. Pirrett, recently appointed lady officer for the ladies’ section of the division The remainder of the evening was spent in listening to a talk on 1 Food To Bo Stored for an Emergency.’ Mr Pirrett pointed out that certain foods would keep for a much longer period than others, and that it would be advisable to renew the emergency supply every 12 months He also gave a list of the quantities o£ food which would be essential for 48 hours’ rations Samples of ten. sugar, and bread, suitably packed, were handed round.
