RAIN WILL BECOME GENERAL The following weather report was issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the southern districts—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Halfmoon' Bay : The anti-cyclone is moving slowly olf the Dominion, while a rather vigorous depression is located over the central portion of the Tasman Sea. Forecast: Freshening northerly winds, later reaching gale force in exposed positions. Weather cloudy to overcast, with rains gradually becoming fairly general. Temperatures milder. Seas rough on the western coast; elsewhere moderate. DULL BUT MILD. Cloudy to overcast conditions prevailed in the city this morning, but the weather, despite the fairly strong north-east breeze, was milder than yesterday Up to 1 o’clock the maximum morning temperature was 56deg, and the minimum between that hour and 9 a.m. was 48deg. These figures compared more than favourably with yesterday’s readings of 61.4 deg and 41.2 deg. The sun was showing a tendency to break through the clouds at 1 p.m., and it appeared then as if tjja afternoon conditions would be pleasant. No rain or frost was ~ recorded last night. The barometer in the city registered 30.15 in, and was falling. AT OTHER CENTRES. Although barometers were still high over the Dominion at 9 a.m. to-day readings showed a marked decline on thq very high registrations of yesterday, and in the far south the decline was considerable, the reading at Puysegur Point being only 30in, compared with 30.51 in yesterday. The highest readings were at Auckland and Wellington, 30.45inj while elsewhere they were in the vicinity of 30.25 i- Temperatures ranged from 35deg at Auckland, arid Christchurch, Akaroa, and Cape Campbell reported air temperatures of 50deg. Winds were again variable, and generally showed an increase in strength, a strong breeze from the east-north-east at Christchurch reaching 27 m.p.h. being the most forceful. Directions were mainly easterly, with a tendency to become northerly in places. No centre reported blue sky, cloud predominating generally, and completely overcast conditions ruled at Auckland, Farewell, Spit, Greymouth, Dunedin, and Puvsegur Point. Seas varied from smooth at Puysegur Point to rough at Dunedin; elsewhere they were slight to modearto.
