RACKETEER SENTENCED
PRISON AND FINE FOR INCOME TAX EVASION CASE IN KANSAS CITY. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, May 22. (Received May 23, at 12.15 p.m.) A case approaching that of Hines in significance ended to-day, when Tom Pendergast political overlord of the Kansas City machine-ridden municipal government, was sentenced to 15 months in a Federal prison for evading 443,000 dollars income tax payments. He was fined 10,000 dollars. Sensational evidence adduced -during the trial showed that Pendergast had wagered 2,000,000 dollars on horse races in 1935, losing 600,000. He had an enormous income from a diversity of rackets, including levies on insurance business.
