‘—Ministerial.— The Minister of Defence and Post-master-General (Hon. F. Jones) was engaged to-day on departmental business. He returns to Wellington by the express to-morrow morning, and leaves for Hamilton on Tuesday, and on Wednesday he will lay the foundation stone of the new chief post office there. Mr Robert Duncan was a passenger by the express this morning, bound for Auckland. Mr Peter Barr left for Christchurch by to-day’s express. A Christchurch Press Association telegram records the death of the Rev. Hubert Thomas York, vicar of St. Peter’s, Upper Riccarton for the past 29 years; aged 66. Miss E. E. Marshall and Messrs J. H. Bell, W. J. Clarke, and B. N. Taylor, of Dunedin, and Mr R. B. Orr, of" Green Island, have been admitted to membership of ,the New Zealand Society of Accountants with the status of A.R.A.N.Z. (associate registered accountant)^ Commissioner and Mrs Adams, who have been in charge of the Salvation Army in New Zealand for the last four and a-half years, will be paying their final visit to Dunedin this week-end. Their term in New Zealand has been a very successful one, during which the Salvation Army has grown and developed. New halls have been opened in various .parts of the country, and new corps established. Commissioner and Mrs Adams will be leaving New Zealand in June for London, where they will take part in the high council and the election of a new general to replace General Evangeline Booth, who will relinquish her command in September. At the conclusion of the of the Hanover Street Choir last evening the members assembled at the ‘home of Mr and Mrs L. J. Greenberg to bid them farewell prior to their departure for Wellington. Presenting Mrs Greenberg with a gift of crystal, Mr H. P. Desmoulins, the conductor, made reference to her valued connection with the choir.

Mr L. 0. Miller, who has for the past 17 years occupied the position of manager of the Auckland branch of Ross and Glendining Ltd., and has been in the firm’s service for over 30 years, has been appointed a director of the company in succession to Mr Charles Netting (London), whose resignation was recently accepted. Mr Netting’s connection with the company extended to nearly 50 years, and for many years he had occupied the status of director in London. His retirement js due to his desire to relinquish business life, and in accepting his resignation the board recorded a minute highly appreciative of his long connection and efficient service.

The Bishop of Wellington, Rt. Rev. H. St, Barbe Holland, is to leave Wellington on Tuesday to join the Akaroa, scheduled to sail from Auckland next Friday for London. The bishop, acting on medical advice and urged to do so by the Standing Committee and the diocesan officers, has decided to go Home this year to continue the improvement of his health till beds fully restored. He will be accompanied by Mrs Holland and Miss K. B. Robson, and expects to return in January, 1940. “ It is most disappointing to me that I shall lose the opportunity of taking part in the Lambeth conference of bishops of the Anglican communion next year,” Bishop Holland said in an interview. “ But it was a choice _ which allowed of only one decision in view of the doctor’s advice.” The bishop said that he wanted people to realise that his leave was just sick leave, and that nothing in the world would prevent him coming back to his task in New Zealand if he had the health to come back.
