The incident happened in the straight with a round to go..

NOTES ON THE EVENTS [Special to the 'Star.') Mohican went off smartly in the Preliminary Handicap, and had a good lead from Swift Guy, Violet Wrack, Indolent, Prince Harvester, and Shadeland, who were in close order. Mohican broke badly and the others went on as named. The favourite, Gerfalcon, broke at the start, and lost fully 3sec. The order was the same entering the straight. At the end of a circuit, passing the stand, Violet Wrack and Swift Guy were followed by Indolent and Mohican, with Te Kahu, Shadeland. and Gerfalcon next, all close up. Running up the back Mohican broke and Violet Wrack, owing to the same fault, lost her lead entering the straight. Swift Guy and Gerfalcon came away by themselves. After a great battle Swift Guy beat Gerfalcon a short head. Indolent was five lengths away, a neck ahead of Listowel, then came Te Kahu, who trotted well, but covered a lot of ground. Shadeland and Violet Wrack were nest. Indolent was a certainty, but for breaking badly at the start. Gerfalcon was a not favourite, with Mohican, Swift Guy, and Listowel well supported. The Auckland horse was neglected.

The Fendalton Handicap was really a two-horse race with another half dozen runners always handy to them. Great Jewel led from Quest, Great Divide, Moana Tama, Three Bells, Parauri, the last named being on the outside. The three leaders were never headed, although Parauri threatened to do it three furlongs from home. In. the final burst down the straight Great Jewel lasted to beat Quest a head. Great Divide was three lengths away a head in front of Moaha Tama. After a gap came Jovial, Twenty Grand, Salalon, Acuity' Parauri. The favourite, _ Acuity, was always in behind Parauri, but the job of travelling three sulkies out from the rails was too much for both of them. „ ... Both are fine pacers, with better luck another day they will be hard to beat. Ihe winner, Great Jewel, paid a big dividend for a fifth favourite each way, the reason being that Acuity and Parauri carried nearly half the investments. ' „ • # * *

Interest in the Wilkin Handicap settled on Van Derby, who carried twice as much on the win machine as the second choice. Windsor Lass. He stripped better than a week previously, but was 'still much on the big side Token, Mankind, Jesse Owens, Labourman, Bill B, and Marlene began smartly, while Van Derby lost some ground. The order was the same at the end or a circuit, with Van Derby right up. As he ran to the leaders he broke badly and did not settle down until entering the back stretch, when .he was last again. From there on he flew. He tired in the last furlong and finished third behind Marlene and Token. His last half mile was covered in W 3-sscc and he was outside many sulkies all the way. He is a great pacer, but is wayward and inclined to leave bis feet. Labourman was a close fourth, clear of Bill B, Wee Wrack. Jesse Owens. # , «

In the Easter Handicap Willow Wave failed to go away properly, whi e Bonnv Azure went off at a gallop. Plutus led for a quarter, where Bonny Azure displaced him. At the stand the order was Bonny Azure, Plutus, Graham Direct, Kind’s Play, Ironside, Lucky Jack, Parisienne. The order was the same at the end of a mile, done an 2mm 14sec. With six furlongs to go_ the order was Bonny Azure, King s Play, Plutus, Ironside, Lucky Jack, Pansienne. The last-named went up. m the back stretch. Entering the straight King's Play was clear of Parisienne and Plutus, the three being well clear of the rest. King’s Play ran on to win easily by three lengths from Plutus, who beat Parisienne by two lengths. Luckv Jack was a poor fourth,, just heading Bonny Azure, Graham Direct, Ironside. . , , T , , The bracketed pair Lucky Jack anci Parisienne carried almost twice as much as Plutus, who was a slightly better fancy than the winner, King’s Play. On the day nothing in the race had a chance with King’s Play.

Colonel Grattan won easily at the Ashburton meeting, and he won easier in the Belfast Handicap. It was a one-horse race. He shot to the front at once and led all the way. The first mile was done in 2min 11 3-ssec, .and the mile and a-half in 3min 19 2-ssec, Isobel Derbv. Marsceres, Onr War, Southern Smile, and Donald Dhu following in line. At the end of 12 furlongs Donald Dhu made a forward move, but Colonel Grattan increased his lead. He romped home four lengths clear of Donald Dhu, who was three lengths ahead of Marsceres. Then followed a beaten lot. Colonel Grattan was slightly better backed than Donald Dhu. The pair were twice as well backed as Gallant Knight, who was third choice. 1

The Express Handicap, over two miles, for unhoppled trotters, was a fine contest. It was a good betting race, the public making Captain Bolt and Peggoty favourites well ahead of the rest of the field. All went away smartly. Royal Romance, Mute, Franz Derby, Golden Eagle, Amonos, Helen’s Bay, was the order, with Peggoty making up ground fast, followed by Captain Bolt. The order was the same at the end of a mile save that Peggoty and Captain Bolt had run up into third and fourth places. After entering the straight for the last time Peggoty and Captain Bolt, although very weary, had enough left to take the lead, followed by Aristotle and Mute. Driven out, Peggoty beat Aristotle half a length, with Captain Bolt a length away, just clear of Mute. Then, within striking distance were Pilot Peter, Walter Wrack, Amonos, and Franz Derby.

There was a great finish in the Express Handicap. Horsepower, Fine Art, Nell Grattan, and Sandusky went past the post in line, being placed as named by the judge, half-heads between them. Dark Hazard led from Play On, Fremont, Icevus, Nell Grattan. The order was the same for over 12 furlongs, with Fine Art and Horsepower making up ground. Sandusky, Nell Grattan were first into the straight from Fine Art. One hundred yards from the post Fine Art looked a winner. Horsepower then flashed up and just beat Fine Art, with Nell Grattan, who got stopped three furlongs from home, inches away, barely in front of Sandusky. These four were well clear of the rest.

Van Derby was started a second time, on this occasion in the Oxford Handicap,' a ten-furlong race. Again he misbehaved. Breaking up at the start the leaders, were 100yds away before he began to pace. Once racing, he showed great speed, running the first half of the last mile in 59 2-ssec. Six furlongs in 1.29; he was then near the leaders. Morewa and Van Derby were first into the straight from Light-

ning Lady, and Walter Guy, With a furlong to go Van Derby was out by himself. Ho made one or two scrambles and then broke badly. Lightning Lady got up to beat Morewa a length, with Walter Guy a length away, four clear of Van Derby. Aircraft, Morewa, and Connenora were responsible for the early pace. Van Derby was backed down to a ridiculous price.
