NORTHERN DEFEATED buist shield to thistle Making fuller use of their opportunities near the gaol area, Thistle (Christchurch) defeated Northern by 4 goals to 2 at the Gardens on Saturday afternoon, and earned the right to hold the Buist Shield for a year. The game was played under the finest conditions, and play was fast and full of incident. Northern more than held their own up to the half-time interval, but afterwards their combination suffered, allowing Thistle to give their forwards greater scope, which they were not slow in appreciating. Though very'open at the beginning, the game lacked interest to some extent in its closing stages, when Northern were definitely inferior. The teams: — Thistle. —J. Tolchard; W. Reynolds, J. Anderson; A. Wilson, D. Gowans, R. Mitchell; J. M’Lennan, W. Wear, H. M’Grath, E. Hall, B. O’Rowe. Northern. —H. Bennett; A. Sutherland, J. Anderson; D. Wallace, N. Buchanan, H. Bertenshaw; P. M’Farlane, R. Gordon, R. M’Leau, T. Anderson, L. Reynolds. It was well into the first spell when the first goal came, but it was a pretty manoeuvre, well worth awaiting. Gordon opened up a gap for M’Farlane on the right. He carried on and placed to Anderson at the _ goalmouth, who made no mistake with an easy shot. There were times when the Northern shootists were sadly astray, and their monotonously poor goal-finding did not improve as they went on. There was no further score in the spell. Thistle scored three quick goals—Hal) two with close shots, and M’Lennan the other. Then Northern were awarded two penalties, one of which was turned to account by Gordon. Finally Hall netted another close shot for Thistle, and the game ended:— Thistle 4 Northern ... ... 2 Mr J. Welsh was the referee. ' At the conclusion of the game the president of the Northern Club (Mr W. P. Smith) congratulated the winners, and Miss Buist presented the shield. TECHNICAL COLLEGE BEATEN At Christchurch on Saturday the match between the Christchurch and Dunedin Technical Colleges senior teams resulted in a win for the home team by 8 goals to 3.
