MANCHESTER UNITY

In the first appearance in his mother lodge as Prov. G.M. of the Otago District, M.U., Hro. E. Ransome was greeted with an attendance of upwards of 200 Oddfellows, representing 16 lodges. The function was held in St. Luke’s Hall, Milton. P.P.G.M. 13ro. W. Sellar introduced the newlyappointed G.M. and D.G.M., together with the Prov. G.S and Prov. Treasurer, to the Loyal Milton Lodge. Other lodges represented were Loyal Victoria, Princess Mary, Queen of Otago, Centenary, Valley, Caversham, Alexandra, Albion, Dalton, Kaitangata, Outram, Dunedin, Hand , and Heart, and Papanui, also the Loyal Lodge of Scotland. Toasts were honoured, each lodge replying and congratulating ‘Loyal Milton on the first of its membe-s to be elected to district honours, and paying tribute to the sterling work of Orb. Ransome as an outstanding Oddfellow. The district officers paid their tribute, and appealed to Loyal Milton and the lodges in South Otago to show by their continued interest their appreciation of the honour bestowed. 1 ' Bro. Ransome thanked sisters and brethren for their tributes of appreciation and promises of whole-hearted support. N.G. Sister Lyon presided at the meeting of Loyal Princess Mary, when the delegates to the annual district meeting reported on the business transacted, and. were thanked. The lodge was honoured with ' a visit from P.P.G.M. Bro. Sellar, who introduced to the meeting the newly-appointed Prov. D.G.M., Bro. H. Masters. On the adjournment being taken, a camp fire evening was successfully staged, with music, song, and story. ' Loyal Albion had a good attendance at its meeting,, N.G. Bro. Longworth presiding. During the meeting each delegate reported on proceedings at the recent district meeting. Later the newly-appointed Prov. D.G.M. (Bro. H. Masters) was introduced by the P.P.G.M. (Bro. Stabb). The chief business was an address by Bro. Stabb on the qucnqueimial report. Before speaking on tne report itself, Bro, Stabb gave an interesting survey on what constituted an actuarial calculation and' explained how the necessity, for such calculations came about. The valuation showed the lodge to be in a perfectly sound financial condition. Old members’ night was celebrated by Loyal Caversham at its recent meeting, N.G. Bro, V. Parker presiding The meeting opened in mourning out of respect to the memory of the late P.G.cßro. D. M. Wildy. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried. Prov. C.S. Bro. Slijgo, Prov. Treas. Bro Hopcraft, and I.P.P.G.M. Bro. Sellar represented the executive, and lodges represented were Loyal Oamaru, Cromwell, Tapanui. Prince of Wales, Albion, Duhedin, Hand and Heart, and Shamrock, Rose, Thistle of Southland. The toast of “ Old Members ” was proposed bv Per. Sec. Bro. List, a' of elderly members - responding. The Prov. D.G.M. presented an emblematical,certificate to PG. Bro. Ron Dickson for services rendered - , and items were given by an orchestra conducted by, Bro. Himburg, and songs were rendered by Mr Collins and Bro. J. Kearns. . „ „ .. ' , n At the Loyal Valley meeting N.G. Bro. Baehop greeted the newly-ap-pointed Prov - . D.G.M., who was.accompanied by the 1.P.P.G.8. and P.P.G.M. Bro. Stabb. The mam item of business was the reception of the report of proceedings at the annual district meeting by lodge delegates. P.P.G.M. Bro. J. Robson maintained that the time was ripe for doing away with the half-yearly district meeting and for the appointment of a Committee of Management to transact the business of the district. He gave members notice of his intention to bring forward a proposition on those lines. Later in the, evening a card tournament was hold for prizes donated by the P.P.G.M'., the prize winners being Bros. Jarvis and Jones.
