GOOD TEMPLARS

GRAND LODGE OF NEW ZEALAND MEETS The Grand Lodge sessions of the. International Order of Good Templars opened the business sessions on Saturday morning, the Grand Chief Templar, Bro. W. lies, presiding over a good attendance of delegates. Representatives were present from Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Port Chalmers, Waitati,’ and Dunedin, lodges. Member** learned with deep regret of the sud-, den passing of Sister Mrs Campbell, sen., a very old Templar, and mother of the Grand Counsellor. Sympathy was expressed in the usual manner, and the Grand Lodge attended the funeral in a body. The Grand Chief Templar, assisted, by his officers, conferred the Grand Lodge Degree of Justice upon three candidates, the ceremony being well carried out. The report of the G.C.T. was well received and Bro. lies thanked for his good work and unfailing courtesy. Bro. W. J. Trevithick, of Wellington, Grand Secretary, gave a comprehensive account of his department, the > returns showing a good financial position, although the , numbers are slightly lower. Two new lodges' have been opened since last Grand Lodge, and some have closed for a while.

The juvenile department was reported upon jby the G.S.J.W. 'Bro. Pace, of Auckland. Two new temples in Wellington have been opened, and the membership now stands at 802. This is a decrease since last Grand Lodge, due to three factors —difficulty in obtaining ' suitable leaders, scarcity of meeting places, and closing pf adult lodges. The financial position is stronger than at previous report. The Grand Lodge trustees showed the investments to be very much larger, chiefly owing to the sale of old properties. The evening session wgs taken up with the consideration of remits, most of which were on matters relating to the working of the order. On Sunday evening the members attended Divine service at Cargill road Methodist Church, where the Rev. H. C. Orchard delivered an address which was most inspiring. Representatives from W.C.T.U., Sons and Daughters of Temperance, and Independent Order of Rechabites were present. Following the service members adjourned to the Sunday School Hall where the Grand Chief “ Templar and others expressed their appreciation and thanks for the splendid address and service. LODGE MEETINGS The Rescue T/odge. No. 105. met in the Kensington Hall. Chief Templar Bro. E. Brooks presiding over a large

attendance. The occasion was the closing of the queen carnival, the final: positions being: Sister Betty Marshall 1,209 votes. Sister K. Yates 621, Sister Beatrice O’Hara 809. The queen’s father thanked the lodge for the support given to the winner and congratulated the other competitor present, Sister O’Hara. The Star of the South Juvenile Temple, No. 15, met on Tuesday, Chief Templar Sister B. O’Hara presiding over a fair attendance, with Supt. Bro. E. Brooks in charge.' A practice was held for the Grand Lodge concert. Bro. W. lies, GiC.T.. addressed the temple. Star of the South Juvenile Temple, No. 15, held its annual picnic at Company Bay, when the following assisted: Bro. W. A. lies, Sister Mrs lies, Sister Mrs Lenz, Sister Mrs Brooks, Sister Mrs Hall, and Superintendent Bro. E. Brooks. Results of the principal races':—Under 12, Sister B. O’Hara 1, Sister D. Bloxham 2. Boys: Bro. G. Christie 1. Bro. R. M'Connachie 2. Over 12 (girls); Sister G. O’Hara 1, Sister D. Flawn 2. Young men’s race; Bro. C. Brooks 1, Bro. F. Findlay 2. Young women’s race: Sister Mrs Hall 1, Sister P. Bundo 2. A relay race was run, the following team (off scratch) winning:—Bros. Findlay, Leithly. Sister Hall’, and Brn Brooks.
