(Received January 31, at 8 a.m.)
George Weinberg, who was expected to be the star witness in the second trial ..of Hines, which is at present under way, shot himself dead in the bathroom of his home. He used a pistol belonging to a detective who was assigned by Mr Dewey to_ prevent just such an occurrence. Weinberg found the gun in a pocket of the detective’s overcoat, in a bedroom wardrobe.
Mr Dewey suspended the detective for negligence. He. said he would use the transcript of Weinberg’s testimony at the previous trial, but he did_ not think it would bo nearly as effective.
[James Hines is a Tammany Hall leader at present on trial on charges of graft and various illegal activities. The prosecution alleges that he was associated with New York gangsters in several profitable “ rackets.”]
