(From Our Balclutha Correspondent.] PERSONAL. Mr 11. J. Vickers, formerly of Kaitangata, and well known in South Otago, returned to Kaitangata on Wednesday evening on furlough from Samoa. Mr Vickers has for the past six years been teaching in Apia, where he is in charge of the European school. Some 450 pupils attend this school, which has a staff of 10 European teachers in addition to Native teachers. BALCLUTHA COURT. The monthly sitting of the Balclutha Magistrate’s Court was held on Wednesday, Mr H. J. Dixon. S.M., presiding. TRAFFIC CASES. Clutha Carrying Company were charged with exceeding the licensed load.—Convicted and fined 30s, with 10s costs. Thomas J. Hcffernan, Waipahi, for exceeding 25 miles an hour in a motor lorry, was convicted and fined 40s, with 10s costs. For failing to give way to traffic approaching on the right, Lawrence H. Frye, Balclutha, was convicted and fined 20s, with 10s costs. F. Gordon, Balclutha, for driving a motor car without a warrant of fitness, was convicted and fined 20s, with 10s costs. N. Goughian, Romahapa, was charged with driving a motor cycle without a warrant of fitness, and also with having no driver’s license.—The first charge was withdrawn, and on the second ho was convicted and fined ss, with 12s costs. •—Civil List.— Judgment by default was given in the following cases: —Henry B. Flett, jun. (Kakapuaka) v. John D. Williamson (Waitahuna), £l9 4s, with £2 16s costs; John H. Stevenson Ltd. v. Robert. D. Wink (Patearoa), £l3 17s 6cl, with £2 0s 6d costs; K. E. Grace (Balclutha) v. T. Hockford (Tapanui), £5 3s 6d, with 15s costs; Waiwera Service Stores v. James B. Lawrence (Timaru), £l9 12s 7d, with £2 16s 6d costs.

Mary Elizabeth Mennell, Balclutha, proceeded against Francis James Farquhar, Balclutha North, for possession of tenement and £6 12s, arrears of rent. —Judgment for plaintiff, with £1 13s 6d costs, posssesion to be retained by defendant if the amount was paid on or before January 10. —Attempted Suicide.—

A young man, whose name was suppressed, was charged with attempting to commit suicide by shooting himself at Chaslands on November 7.—Constable Myers (Owaka) said accused was a single man, living by himself, and on the date mentioned had wounded himself with a rifle. He had received treatment at Balclutha Hospital. The reason given for the attempt on his life was that he thought everyone in the district was “ against him.” His parents, who resided at Ratanui, were prepared to take him home.—Accused’s father said he was 21 years of age. He could give no reason for the act, as before it happened accused seemed quite cheerful. He would probablv be able to find work for him on the farm, and would not like to see him go back to bis work at Chaslands.—Ordered to come up tor sentence within 12 months if called upon and to pay hospital expenses at the rate of 10s a week, —Seasonal Greetings.— Before the sitting commenced Milt. 11. Grigor. on behalf of the members of' the Bar, court officials, and Press, conveyed seasonal greetings to Ills Worship, who suitably acknowledged.
