ART UNION PROCEEDS

WONDERFUL HELP TO CHARITABLE "ORGANISATIONS [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 21.

The value of alluvial gold art unions for charitable organisations was emphasised by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry). He said that the distribution of the profits to mayors*relief funds and to the funds of philanthropic and kindred institutions gave renewed financial vigour to many bodies whose work would otherwise be hampered, or would cease. Mr Parry said he had received occasional letters from citizens saying that ; although they disbelieved in art unions, they had put aside their principles because a particular society doing good work among deserving people had benefited from tha funds so raised.

“ When the Audit Officer gives hia certificate of the profits derived from each art union.” the Minister said, “ the sum of £5,000 is almost automatically distributed to the various mayors’ relief funds under instructions from the Government. _ The balance ia banked until it grows into a sum sufficient for allocation, f generally twice yearly, to philanthropic organisations meriting assistance. While I was in. communication with some of the Auckland institutions this week, the management showed me how, by_ reason of the grants made from art unions, their work could be extended.”
