OBITUARY
MR R. W. CHERRY CRICKETER'S DEATH AFTER OPERATIOH The many friends of Mr Keg. W Cherry will' be shocked to hear of his death, which took place this morning following a minor operation. The operation itself was not considered at all serious, hut complications ensued and Mr Cherry rapidly sank and passed away in the early hours of the morning. Aged only 37 years, he was the eldest son of the late Mr W. H. Cherry, who was for long in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company. He came out from the Old Country with his parents in 1914, and attended the North-east
Valley School and the Technical College. On leaving school he joined Messrs Sargood Son and Ewen, and for a number of years past was well known as a traveller for that firm in Central Otago and Southland districts. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the M.U.1.0.0.F. Mr Cherry was also prominent in the sporting world. As a member of the Northern Association Football Club, he represented Otago at that code, but it was perhaps as a cricketer that he was best known in the field of sport. First as a member of tlie Dunedin Club and later of the Kaikorai Club, he proved a very able batsman and early won representative honours, continuing to give valuable service to the province for many seasons. Only on Saturday last he made top score for his club and was then in his usual health and spirits. Mr Cherry was of a bright, cheerful disposition, and his fellow players and friends generally will realise with sorrow that their happy association with him has been ended. Ihe leaves a widow but no family.
