TWO DOMINION RECORDS

OTAGO SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS GREIG SHIELD RETAINED BY KIWI Two New Zealand records were broken at the second Otago championship swimming carnival at the Municipal Baths last night, and the generally high standard of performance was further indicated by the establishing of three new Otago records. The Empire Games swimmer. Miss Winnie Dunn, who already holds the New Zealand 100 metres and 220yds national ladies’ breast stroke records, made a special attempt on her own record for 100 metres of Imin 33sec, and succeeded in reducing the time to Imin 31 2-ssec, following a brilliant swim. Her first 100yds was covered in S 3 2-ssec. Less than an hour later. Miss Dunn carried off her second Otago title, the 100yds ladies’ breast stroke, and her time of 84sec is to be applied for as a New Zealand ladies’ record, there being no recognised mark for this distance at the present time.

Miss Ghristine Garvin, as in the 100yds event, had a swim-over in the 220yds intermediate girls’ free style championship, and, making a brilliant effort and showing admirable style, she carved her way over the distance in 2min 47 4-sseo, which was a second faster than the New Zealand intermediate record, established by Miss Kathleen Grey, of Auckland, at the Dominion championship meeting in Nelson last January. A now breast stroke star has appeared in the youthful Kiwi swimmer, \V. Dyson, and after winning tho 100yds title in 76 l-ssec on Tuesday night, he registered the fastest 220yds breast stroke swim ever put up in the Dunedin pool, his time in taking the men’s title last night being 3min 2 3-ssec. This was 4 2-osec faster than the Otago record held bv the Empire Games swimmer, J. C. \V. Davies, and was only 1 l-ssec slower, than the New Zealand record, held jointly by - Davies and L. Smith, whose times were both recorded in salt water. Dyson unwound a fine finishing sprint, and it is predicted that he will break 3min before the end of the season.

The outstanding performer in the ladies’ division was Miss Islay Purdie, and, although she did not equal her very best times, she swam so well that there is every reason to believe that she will be in top form for the national ehampionships. She was not seriously extended in the free style events, and last night took the 220yds title in 2min 54 3-ssec —a better performance than last year’s.' She won the 100yds ladies’ back stroke title in the new Otago record time of Imin 22 4-ssec, after a spirited tussle with her clubmate, Miss Greta Harris, who swam exceedingly well on a short preparation. Miss Purdie won five titles—three free style and two back stroke—a fine performance.

Feature of the men’s division was the well-contested 100yds free style race, E. Toase, the Dunedin swimme.r winning his second title in good style in 61 2-Ssec. The St. Clair veteran, H. D. Gillies, who has been in championship competition for 15 years, swam one of the best races of his career for a well-earned second place, only 2yds behind the winner.

The outstanding junior was Colin Bell, who collected his third title and again went close to the New Zealand record when he won the 75yds junior boys’ back stroke title in 60sec. This was an Otago record, and only 2sec outside the Dominion mark put. up by Mark Bell, of Auckland, last season. The 100yds junior girls’ free style championship carried with it the Nawi Kira Shield, and a popular win was scored by Miss A. Smith, of the Kaikorai Club, who won by a yard from Miss N. Lane (Kiwi) in Imin 21 l-ssec. The winner is a promising swimmer with plentv of dash and determination, and she already had two second places to her credit. The shield was subsequently presented to the winner by Mr S. Brown, deputy-chairman of the Otago Centre.

Last year’s New Zealand junior girls’ breast stroke champion, Miss Mary Stewart (Kiwi) won a closelyfought 75vds intermediate girls’ breast stroke title from Miss C. Clark (Dunedin), the time of Go l-ssec actually being three-fifths of a second faster than last year’s winning time in the Dominion event in this division.

Although he had a swim-over, I. Wilson (Kiwi) returned the good time of Imin 24 2-ssec for the lOOyda intermediate boys’ breast stroke. The times ih the intermediate boys’ free style events were slow, but this class revealed a swimmer of promising style in C. M'Gregor, who was competing at his first championship meeting, and carried off three titles and a second, his win in the 220yds event last night being a decisive one, though his time of 3min 3 3-ssec was a good deal slower than usual.

The 200yds six-a-side relay championship saw Dunedin’s sequence of wins in this event maintained, a wellbalanced team retaining possession of the Olds Shield which goes with this event, the time being Imin 42 3-ssec. Dunedin has won this race for the last seven years. Miss Gwen Rix. national champion, won the ladies’ diving title for the fourth time, and the Empire Games representative was in good form, some of her voluntaries last night being very fine efforts. The men’s champion, D. Freeman, also dived well, showing more confidence in his voluntaries than he had done in his compulsories. Neither event in the intermediate class was up to standard, the New Zealand girls’ champion, Miss Rita Smith, diving well below form. The boys’ event was won by R. B. Ingram, and though he improved in his voluntaries the standard fell a good deal short of what it has been in recent years. With only two events to be_ decided, the position of the Alex. Greig Shield for the interclub premiership cannot be affected, and for the third year in succession this has been won by_ the Kiwi Club, the points to date being: Kiwi 198, Dunedin 75, Kaikorai 20, Zenith 11, St. Clair 6. Balclutha 1. The events remaining to be decided are the 440yds men’s free style championship at the St. Clair hour on Monday night and the one mile men’s free style championship at the Kiwi hour oil Tuesday night.
