FINE WORKMANSHIP

PROGRESS IN EDUCATION DISPLAY BY PUPILS Education to-day lias advanced a long way from the days when the word was synonymous with the three “ R’s,” as was evidenced by the pupils of the Dunedin North Intermediate School at their annual exhibition of work yesterday. In all the exhibits there was a high standard of workmanship, which says much for the instructors and pupils, as only a short period each week is spent on these subjects. The woodwork class was also of a high standard, judging by the exhibits of dinner wagons, cabinets, and even sets of games. The girls’ work was also excellent, there being on display dresses made during the term, in addition to lamp-shades, trays made of cane, and products of the bookbinding classes. The girls are also instructed in the art_ of french-polishing. _ A most interesting part of the school was the home science department, consisting of kitchen, dining room, and a small bedroom. The children are instructed in housekeeping, and on ocasions invite parents to have dinner there, where all the food is cooked and served by the children. The staff thanks the Parents’ Association for providing afternoon tea. Competitions were held in all sections, and the judges’ awards were as follows: — Written Work (Judged by Mr G.
