DULL—RAIN PROBABLE The following weather forecast was issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the south-i ern districts—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Halfmoon Bay:— A rather deep westerly depression with a considerable northward extension is begining to cross the southern portion of the South Island. Pressure is rising over Eastern Australia. Forecast : Light northerly winds at first, but changing soon to freshening westerly and south-westerly. Weather dull and in places misty. Rain probable in. most places, but more especially in the west and south. Temperatures becoming colder. Seas rough on the south cojist; otherwise moderate. LOCAL CONDITIONS. Despite a mist blanket overhanging the citv this morning, temperatures rose to ‘a high level, the peak registration at the Gardens at 1 p.m. being 71deg from 9 o’clock. The minimum reading was also higher than usual by at lOdeg over this period. Gradually during the morning the mist disappeared, but though conditions were still dull, the weather was the most pleasant experienced for some time. Barometric pressure at 1 o’clock this afternoon was falling at 29.55 in, but it did not appear likely that therewould be any marked change later. Rainfall over a period of 24 hours from 9 yesterday morning was recorded at the Gardens as .03in, while the respective thermometer' readings over the same time were 66.5 and 54.5 deg. OTHER CENTRES.
